A friend gave me an old Marquette 307A battery charger last week. Since it was a 6/12volt heavy duty looking unit I decided to replace the cables (insulation was badly cracked and missing) and give it a new paint job etc. Well I lost track which internal cable terminals are positive/negative? A search on the web has been futile for any info and so wonder if John T or other knowledgeable members can help.

Take a volt ohm meter put it on DC and touch the leads to the cables, if you have the polarity reversed it will show as negative on the meter.

Start at a higher voltage range than you think possible. Then work down. Guessing your no load voltage won't exceed 25 volts.

Should add one more bit of info.
The red lead on the meter is the positive.
If you touch the red lead to a positive source, (and black to a negative) the meter will display positive volts.
If you have the black lead on a positive source, (reversed) the meter will display negative volts.
BTW, This assumes you have the leads in the correct holes in the meter.

Voltmeter reading positive? The post that you are touching with the red lead is the positive post.
You can check it out on any battery where they identify the + and - posts.
