What is the proper name of the joint they use on 3/8" rod for tie rods on go carts and other applications? I thought they were heims joints, but those have a hole in them that you stick a bolt through instead of a stud on a ball.

McMaster Carr calls them "ball joint linkage". The ones with a hole are called "ball joint ends". I've always called them spherical rod ends.

rod ends is what they are most commonly called. speedway motors has a big selection and ok prices!

i think it depends on who sells them. I have seen a mower steering joint called a heim joint, and it was female threaded to hit the mower rod, then had a stud sticking out at a 90. stud was on a ball.

stick the stud thru the mower steering rack, and add the nut.

most i see on the internet are just ball/eye joints..

Brand name. Very common years ago, so many still refer to this. Kinda like a Xerox machine being a generic name for a photocopier. Xerox by the way actively defends its trademarks when misused in print publications or whereever they find it.
