Why does my Explorer moo?

Hey guys.

I have a 1998 Ford explorer that is my main parts chaser. It has a 4.0 EFI pushrod engine vin X.

It makes a moaning sound under the hood that varies with throttle position and starts after the engine is at operating temperature.

I tracked the sound down to the area of the mass airflow sensor and have done the following:

Replaced the air filter, inspected the filter housing and intake tube for cracks, sprayed the MAS with the recommended cleaner and insured that all clamps are tight.

Has anyone heard of a MAS making a sound like this? Vibration?

I guess the next step is to replace the MAS. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Brad

I changed the IAC solenoid on our 2003 with the 4.6 and the moaning sound went away.

Tried cleaning it and it lasted a week or so.

Look on the explorer forums and see if the 4.0 is the same deal.

Ours was mainly noisy at idle.

I agree with others on the idle air controller.

Cleaning it might help.

Not sure of any way to test it.

If it were me I'd just replace it and hope I didn't waste 75 bucks.

My super duty has a howl in the windshield cowling that is terrible, have not gotten to it yet.

My 99 4.0 ohv does it every once in a while and after a min it quits and I forget about it for a month and it will suddenly do it again. I'm not worried just curious, but at 180k I'm ok with it.

I agree with it probably being the IAC, you can unplug it to verify, keep in mind the idle may get real low and possibly die. Sometimes you can tap on them with a small hammer or screwdriver handle to get a result too. I found a pic from google images to show you what to look for. IAC is labeled above the circled DPFE sensor.

Thanks for all the replies and help.

I installed a new IAC yesterday and The howling sound is gone along with some driveability issues.

Lots of knowledge on this board!
