What tells it when to fire ?
I have one that will start sometimes and not most time, no mater weather in forward or reverse. When you do get it to run it will run good for a while then will through this fit of not starting. It has gas and fire when it thruoghs this fit. I have had it to shops they get it to run but don't know what they done.

Depending on what brand you have it can be many small problems. I have bits and pieces of a couple old EZ-Go 2 cycle ones like yours and yep they can be hard to figure out. 2 coils one for forward one for reverse and the wiring to them is odd at best and things like a simple bad ignition switch can cause that

If you can tell us what brand and approximate year model of your cart that you have.you have. We may be able to tell you more about what you want to know. There are some things that are unique to each brand.

Just for the record; a Golf cart is the little bag carrier that you push by hand, a Golf car is a motorized 3 or 4 wheel vehicle you ride in.

Gene, you must not of read the heading very good. Why do you see in the [for sale] they are listed as carts?

I think they have 2 compete ignition systems, one for each direction. your thread is kind of hard to understand, but if it wont start in either direction then it must be before the ignition switch, maybe a safety switch?

I have seen several cars display similar symptoms that turned out to be a clogged exhaust.. These exhaust even when clean and new are quite restrictive to meet the whisper quiet sound level required. Add years of questionable quality oils, overly rich fuel mixtures and endless start/stop cycles and a clogged exhaust is the result. A quick test is to remove the head pipe, install a new plug and see if it starts. If it does, mystery solved.
