who is a good co. to get home owners ins if you have a wood stove in your shop ? my ins co. canceled my insurance because i have wood stove in my shop and i won't agree to get rid of it . my shop is 200 feet from my house and is 80% tin . the stove is air tight made of 1/4 steel inch plate . thanks for any help bill.

we had Farm Bureau insurance on the house-with approved wood stove along with the professional installers certificate.

Farm Bureau worked for me too...they put me on a rural or farm policy even though I only have a few acres. I believe they did require the installation meet NFPA standards and that was fine with me for the piece of mind I was covered should something happen. Dan

I am with Indiana Farmers Mutual and they said nothing about wood burner in work/garage 100 foot away from house. In the house I had to hang a heat shield between the floor joist and pipe going to chimney( wood burner is in basement) .

I just got a letter last week about this appears they had come by to inspect and looked in the windows
we never saw anyone around no phone calls they are sob's.

Wait until you have a claim with FB. I had a hail claim on shingles. They only paid $1500, estimate $4300. I asked why? Depreciation and deductible. Then I asked for coverage that I only pay deductible. FB said that wasn't available for rental properties. Others I know got a letter from FB telling them after their shingles are 15 years old they will no longer cover them. So why have FB I ask? I dropped them and found a company who will give me coverage I wanted. 2 years I had a claim and they paid off like an insurance co should.

State Farm dropped me after 3 months. I told agent one building was commercial. No problem. 3 months later it was a problem, They dropped, terminated, canceled my policy.

You only find out just how good your insurance is after you use it. So if you have a company that pays off, keep it.

I was with IN Farmers when Hurricane Ike came through and collapsed my barn onto 9 tractors. They treated my like gold. Much better than expected. No complaints.

Most (I did NOT say ALL.) folks that have complaints with property/casulty insurance claims have not purchased proper coverage, have not read their policies or have filed fradulent claims.

When asking insurance questions, you need to say what state you're in, because insurance is regulated at the state level.

Most insurance policies limit the insured value of outbuildings and their contents to ten percent of the value of the residence. If your shop is on your homeowner's policy and you're not asking to insure for more than the standard ten percent, I'm surprised they even care. But if this is a standalone policy or you want to insure your shop for more than ten percent of the value of your house, then you may have to pull out the woodburner to get insurance.

I had FB for many many years. Agent was fine, but an 'inspector' from home office came by and said, Your shingles are very old, replace the roof ! or no coverage. It din't look great but had no leaks and I needed a year to afford that. However, I cancelled good ole FB ! Got coverage here in Michigan with Meemic. Home & vehicles, saved much $$ !

I've got a commercial building, and I found only one company in this area of Michigan that would insure it, a insurance broker that did commercial insurance. 2 years later, we had a pipe broke, 12K of damage. They paid off promptly. I gladly renewed, the cost went up only $100!!

I increased the coverage on my barn, after I started making improvements to it. You need to buy the right coverage, not just the cheapest.

Sounds like FB doesn't insure your shingles when they get old, like I've been told. I'm glad I changed.

FB dropped me years ago because of a wood stove. It is UL listed and installed to NFPA standards. I switched to Indiana Farmers and not only got lower premiums but the few claims I have had over the years have been paid promptly and with excellent customer service. I bundled it with my vehicle insurance and get some additional discounts. They also let us increase the coverage on contents for a modest additional premium.

Very few, maybe no? insurance company is going to give good graces to a homemade stove, especially in a work shop. Most wont allow a woodstove even if UL labeled in a shop or garage. I have been told this is due to worries over fuels and oils.
We switched to Auto Owners 20 years ago after State Farm dropped me for being a gunsmith. Every bit of my insurance is with them and they are one fine company. Do not expect them to be the cheapest quote for coverage but if hassle free is your goal they cannot be beat.

Nobody does, if a roof is over about 10 years old you are going to get pennies on the dollar, if that on a roof claim.

Site inspections are becoming more common, my agent said it is due to fraud. My son got a letter last week from his carrier that he needed to up grade the handrail on his back steps. My daughter got one from her (different) carrier asking if she was living at the house. She works plus going to school full time and was just a bit ticked off about it,,,

Auto Owners for everything I have also. Except the Model T. Agent has visited my shop several times and never said a bad thing about my stove. In fact he likes it. Comes out to visit and says he wishes he had a place like this instead of living on the lake.

I agree. I have Auto-Owners for the vehicles and home. Couldn't me happier. Have a great agent too. Have no wood burner tho. Could be a different story of I did. Most insurance companies frown on them

Do you really need the insurance? Those folks charge out the A#@& in premiums and if you ever need them they pay you pennies on the dollar for your loss. Unless your house would burn to the ground it wouldn't take long to save up what you would get on a claim if you would just put the money in the bank.

My insurance agent sold me a rider to cover my wood heated shop. I think it costs an extra $25 a year. He informed me that it was available when I wanted to cancel the insurance on the shop. I figured they wouldn't pay when they found the wood furnace in the burned out rubble. Something has changed because they were gonna cancel my coverage when I had the very same furnace in my house basement. If I ever have a fire, it'll be from welding/cutting, but they haven't thought of banning torches and welders yet.

Auto owners for me too. Have had a few auto claims and was satisfied. So far no one can beat the price. Farmers was going to be a little less but then they wanted $25 per car to transfer x 5 cars well there went any savings !
I had to change agents because the one dropped them or auto owners dropped them ? Something about they were not selling enough to bigger businesses ? Well that was because the rates for that was better with another company !

That isn't true. That's want FB wants you to think, but I have full replacement less deductable and I've recently collected on a roof put on in 1998, hail claim. You have to use an independent agent, but it's out there.

Don't know the website policy here,
so without names....shop around.
Anything, any activity, can be insured...just costs $.
When I insured my shop, I was just honest with the agent.
Multiple fire dangers, and if it goes up, run, it won't be stopped.
And if it goes, I want the same shop/tools standing there afterwards.
So, multiple hazards, full replacement costs...premium is high..
It is what it is.

A lot of folks don't want to pay for the coverage they want. So they go online and bxxxx.

I have State Farm and wood stoves get zero mention from them, zero meaning not in the house nor the shop, nor the garage, nowhere is it mentioned. Policies follow state directives and are pretty much written the same for all companies.
