(quoted from post at 05:54:18 06/30/15) Federal law dictates what is legal and illegal for a shotgun - anything under an 18" barrel and 26" overal requires a tax-paid registration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, requiring a background check and either a $200 or $5 tax for every transfer, depending upon the specific manufacturing circumstances of the particular sawed-off modern shotgun being transferred.

Maybe Indiana didn't allow sawed off shotgun even after meeting fed requirements to do so and now they do. Also I THINK fed regs are the shotgun has to be manufactured with the short barrel. One you cut off is not leagel.
(quoted from post at 07:29:50 06/30/15) I have had a 410 snake charmer for 30 + years and it has a barrel length of 18 1/8". When it was bought the paper work was filled out as a handgun.

12 gauge pump shotguns with 18 1/2 inch barrels are readily available for purchase just about anywhere. Why would it make any difference if it came from the factory, or if I clamped it in the vise and used a pipe cutter to shorten the barrel to 18 1/2 inches?
I'm not trying to pick a fight, because I understand that most of the legislators who think up these laws have absolutely NO experience with nor knowledge of firearms.
