Today's whatzit--old screw press

Picked this up several years ago at a tractor show flea market. Seller deals in old tools and such and had no idea where he'd got it or what it was. I didn't have any more idea than he did, but the price was reasonable as part of a package deal of other stuff I was actually interested in, so it came home with me. Been tripping over it ever since and have thought about making it into a cider press, though it's far from ideal as a starting spot, given the length of the area to press versus the width, and the fact there's better than a foot of "dead" space under the screw I'll have to build up. Still, it's bought and paid for, and with the price of vintage cider presses going through the roof it might be worth some fiddling around, as it would only be used for small batches of windfall apples from the local semi-wild trees. There's no identifying marks other than a large "No. 4" cast into the top piece. I thought it might be for gluing up wooden panels or something similar, but a quick Google didn't turn up anything close, though there's hundreds of pictures of all sorts of other varieties of old screw presses. Anyone ever see or use anything similar?

That thought also crossed my mind--I even thought about mounting it sideways for use as a wood vise, blocking the bottom similar to what you'd see with an old-style face vise. However, in both cases, it would probably be more trouble than it's worth, and I have better vises than this one would be after it's done already.

I've been wanting an old press like this. Anyone have one around Central Texas have one?
