Steering Arm Key Way Repair

I have been trying to fix major steering issues on my 40B for years, finally found and ordered replacement steering arm, Finally had a chance to try to install new arm today, it does not work, the linkage hole on the one side is upside down from the original, and the arm is a bit different but I thought it would work.

Now my question, can I take the original arm to a machine shop, have them weld in the screwed up key way and then have them cut a new one in? Seems like it should be possible, but I was not sure. Since I can not get a new part.

Straight or taper shaft with a key? And what's the arm look like? Maybe easier to cut off and weld on a new keyed hubs or fabricate an arm. Is it just the keyway worn, if that's the case file it oversized or have it broached and then make a stepped key to fit

I don't know what a 40B is. Is it a tractor? Is the steering arm you are talking about mounted to the front wheel spindle, like in king pin? What make is it? Does it have a through bolt to compress one side of the steering arm and hold the kingpin....to which the wheel is attached at a right angle... from slipping up and down....aka a cutout in the pin for the bolt to stick through? If you have the bolt, I have good news for you.

40-B what JD or A/C or Farmall or??? Bet if you tried you could find one of use that would have that part laying around and get it cheaper then having a machine shop do all that work which will be in the $75 plus and hour type of thing and probably at least 2 hour job

Okay, this may sound stupid, but in a pinch it's what I'd try. How about making a slot in a piece of wood the width of the keyway you want to cut. Then clamp it onto the part you want the keyway in and use a hand grinder with a wider cutoff wheel to make the keyway and take your time. I've done things like this.. and why does the old keyway need to be welded if it's on the other side of the piece? But without seeing what you're doing this may not be relevant.

I don't know what a 40B is either, HOWEVER, I'm certain that the answer is YES. I've had machine shops fabricate multiple items for me, including for tractors, garden tractors, and trucks. At issue, is the machinist, his or her capabilities, and equipment. You hand a machinist the old part, and preferably what it goes to, or at least photos and measurements (calipers), and I assure you that they probably can, again depending upon the skill set of that machinist, and resources.

Guess what else? Take your parts to a machinist and just ask. Don't take my word for it, takes one of theirs.

Good luck.

Leo,

Spray weld would be a good type of repair . Fill

in the keyway and broach a new one. If a tapered hole

turn a plug with matching taper , cut slot in plug for

broach and cut keyway.

I had some loose key ways on two Bobcat sprockets & repaired about 8-10 years ago.Dealer recommended DEVCON 10210. This stuff works! about $40 @ the time. To make a long store short follow inst on can... It will not release without heat. I had to remove one of those drive sprockets last winter, with a large puller it would not move until heat was applied. It will work for your job . Quick & easy dealer recommended fix.

Get the new key way cut where it's needed to be. Make a half key to fill in the old key way, use a little green loctite to hold it in place and your good to go. As far as the taper being the wrong direction, you'll need to make a tapered sleeve with a shoulder on it and a slice in one side. Then bore the old taper to fit said sleeve. Install the sleeve with a little green stuff and your back to moving dirt.

What kind of key is it? Woodruff or straight? Either way most machine shops should be able to repair a key way. I weld them up and recut them all the time. All it takes is a TIG welder, a Bridgeport and the appropriate cutter.

It is a Massey 40B Industrial. The Key way is a straight key, half moon side is on the spindle. The worn out key way is on the original arm, which obviously works. The "new" one i have is the one with the tapered hole for the steering arm is tapered upside down and will not work at all. I am going to try to have the key way filled and re-cut.
