GE makes one with an Inverter. Basically, when you change the power level to say, 70%, it actually lowers the power of the magnetron to 70% of normal strength.. Most microwaves, when you change the power level to 70%, it has the magnetron activated 7 seconds out of every 10 seconds.
JMHO.

I couldn't really tell you who's the best but our first Microwave was a Panasonic and it lasted 20 years and never had any problems in the 20 years. The next one was a Sharps 2.2 cu.ft. 1200 watt and it run 18 years no problems until the day it qute. We went back to a Panasonic 2.2 cu.ft.1250 watt stainless steel and like itso far.

If you do a lot of frozen pizzas LG makes one with a small oven tray on the bottom. Best Buy sells them. Works GREAT on the pizzas ! The microwave part is good too.
Son just got one for wife on Mother's day.

Tim, it's not a response to your question, but another entry in the "long-lasting microwave oven" contest: when my wife and I got married, we used some of our wedding loot to buy our first microwave - an "Amana Radarange".

After [b:7218853e86][i:7218853e86]thirty years[/b:7218853e86][/i:7218853e86] (next week) both the marriage and the microwave are still going strong!

We keep hoping it will conk out (the microwave, not the marriage) so we can get a newer one, that won't take up so much counter space - this one's as big as a window air conditioner.

We still have the original sales receipt: it's shocking how much that thing cost back in '85!

Panasonic also makes a Inverter technology Microwave, in a couple of different sizes. As noted below, it actually lowers the power to the tube so it runs all the time, just with less output. Much better and smoother than the on/off/on type of system used for years on microwaves. Also much lighter weight and easier to handle. I have and can highly recommend the Panasonic.

I have the same unit and it still works. Marriage only lasted 20 years. New management decided it had to be replaced. The only problem I ever had was the cooling fan quit. $10 replacement but you had to drill several rivets out to get to it so they could prove you had tampered with it in case your children had two heads. Analog timer, it will last forever. Like everything else today the old stuff was better made. Also, I watched "Airplane" more times than I care to admit before I got the "check the radar range" query from Leslie Nielson and the response from down below.

Work has a bunch of Sharp - R-21LCF and they work grate. Very basic controls if you need fancy controls it's not for you.
