Good used electric motors

The South Bend lathe I just got has a three phase motor which I would like to change out to single phase. Anyone know any good sources for motors with good prices?

I'm with Steve, look in to a static phase converter, just make sure you match it to your motor hp. A rotary converter is good if you are going to be stopping and starting a lot or reversing direction, but more money. I have run single spindle screw machines for years on static converters.

Look into a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). They are available with 120 or 220 input. It will also provide speed control.

I second the VFD. Variable Frequency Drives take single phase power and use transistors to convert it to 3 phase. They are relatively cheap and they offer speed control (You can vary the output frequency to the motor to control its speed). They are capable of converting from 230VAC single phase to 3phase up to 3 HP. Automation Direct GS series are pretty good. You can also find them on ebay. Make sure it matches the horsepower, input voltage, and output voltage that you have available.

I think you would be much happier with this option.
