Lithium-ion now have memory effect

Hello,

I just read an article about Lithium batteries. They have found that they do have a memory effect,
The article was by Physics Technology Biology Mathematics Astronomy and Space, by Professor Petr Novak head of the electrochemical energy storage section, and co-author of the study. This changes everything!

Guido,
I bought 2 18v dewalt Lions in 2009. The first one only lasted a few years. I took it apart and the built in computer circuit inside battery had let all it's smoke out. The other battery I haven't done a thing to it. Use it, abuse it, charge it when ever I feel like it. Some times when I'm using it, it runs out of juice and suddenly stops. I read that wasn't good for it, but with the ions, you really have no clue of the charge until it stops working.

Someone pretending to be my friend called me cheap, Really I'm frugal, not cheap like he is. And I should remind him who did his physics home work when he was going to night school. For $31 on ebay I just ordered a new 30000 ma-hr Ni-Mh. That battery has twice the poop of a ion, and a fraction the price too.

Hello Geo TH In,

Funny you said you bought the Lithiums in 2009.I bought a Dewalt drill the same year. Guess what type of cells make up the two packs it came with......NiCads. both pack just as good as they were when new. They may not get the same work out that your put your pack through. You poste on the lithium showed the pack open and since then I have had some apart as well. Same scenario with any series circuit. Replace one bad cell, and the pack comes back to life. I have a few nickel metal cells now, they are 3000Ma. Capacity. I will make a pack from them as soon as I get 15 cells for my drill. I just finished two packs of NiCads one is Close to 3000 Ma capacity. Not too shabby for free recycled cells,

Hello Guido,

As for me my days of replacing cells is over, when I can get a new battery for $31. Guess I'm not as cheap as some think.

I will say my 18 dewalt cordless reciprocating saw has damaged a few batteries, shakes so hard it breaks connections between cells, especially the top cell. When I repair the connection, I use solder wick. It a braided cable. I make it a little long so it can flex when shaken.

After learning what happens if you have two 12v lead acid batteries in series and one battery is bad one is good. Discharging the good battery all the way will cause bad battery to have a reverse polarity. So if that is true, then wouldn't the same hold true when you have 15 cells in series. One cell goes bad, will it also take on a reverse polarity.

People with electric golf carts say you should replace all the batteries at once. Why would that also hold true with cordless batteries? Replace all the cells, don't put a used cells in series with other used cells that may have a different capacity.

Hello Geo TH In,

The last word in your post is the magic word......Capacity. Matched capacity cells is the key. Racing packs we used when racing RC cars were expensive, because it took many cells to make a good long lasting high capacity pack. I still have three high capacity Nickel metal packs,3000ma. I put them together with braded cable. That was 25 yeas ago,

Guido.
