NIMH batteries in a 19.2 volt Craftsman

Had one of my Craftsman 19.2 v lithium batteries puke this morning

I like the lithium as compared to the nicads(which are junk), but they are pricey.

After reading Geo-TH,In's post about batteries, got to wondering if the multi chemistry battery charger that sears sells to go with their lithium batteries will work on nimh (ebay) batteries?

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Fred

fred,
After purchasing my first Ni-Mh battery in 2008, I purchased a pair of 18v dewalt Li-ion and a dewalt 3 way charger to charge all three types of batteries. I noticed the newer charger shut off after battery is charged. The older dewalt charger cooked the battery, it was hot after I took it out of the charger even though it showed battery was charged hours ago.

I would say, if your Li-ion charger shuts off after battery is charged, it should be good on Ni-Mh batteries too. I would never use the old school dewalt charger on the Ni-Mh battery. When I measure the battery voltage after removing it from charger, it about 20.5 volts. The dewalt charger is good for all batteries dewalt makes up to 18v. I think the charger has to have a current regulator in it to limit the charging current to a safe level and some how shuts down when done.

Ebay seems to have the best deals on Ni-Mh batteries.

Yes, the old sears chargers (for the nicads) would just keep cooking the batteries, the newer ones they sell with the lithium batteries shut off....I think they go into a float mode.

May have to try a nimh, see what happens.

Thanks

I think it will be alright to use newer charger and sell the old school charger on craigslist. That's what I did. I even sold my old school charger that used the truck's 12v to charge 18v batteries. Threw in my remaining junk Ni-Cd and told the guy they were junk. He took them and we were both happy.

I charge both types of batteries in my Craftsman smart charger. When either battery becomes fully charged, the charger just goes in maintenance mode.

Hello fred werring,

Here is a picture of a cell being rated. There are 6 1157 bulbs in series loading a single cell. The first 3 on that XRP pack are very close in capacity, with a five minute load time. One cell was 1.160 volts at the end of 5 minutes. The second cell was 1.150 Volts. The third cell was 1.156 volts. So far so good. I think the load draws 10 to 12 amps. I have not checked it lately. I did smoke one of those HF meters, they are not designed to carry a 10 amp load, just momentary testing,

Guido.
