Gas/charcoal combo grill

Decided to buy the boss a Gas/charcoal combo grill for her birthday. I wanted all grates to be porcelain coated. It had to be able to adjust the height of charcoal. Found a Char Broil grill at Menards that fits the bill.

Then I discovered, unlike my old gas grill, no new gas grills that I looked at locally have lava rock. Directly over the burner is a metal roof that blocks the heat. Between burners it burns everything. No added smoke flavor either. Could have gotten the same results in an oven.

I modified the grate that held the lava rock on old grill and now the new gas grill works as it should.

BTW, the rock makes a world of difference and the Father's day cookout was a success.

So why are the new gas grills missing the lava rock?

I don't know, new and improved? I have a new one like you described - hate it. My dad has the old lava rock model and as you know, it sure holds the heat better.

cost savings for the mfg maybe? Today it is anything to cut a nickel out of the cost and increase profit. I have a cousin that recently said the same, and she said she prefers the older type with lava rock. I have never went with the gas, still use charcoal as I like the flavor, otherwise may as well cook in the oven. Found that with just the wife and I, we only need a small grill, so we are using a small 14 inch table top charcoal type and does not need very much charcoal to cook what we need. I had a larger one with the wheels, and adjustable grill, and never used so donated to Salvation Army a couple years back. It had sat in the way before I moved which was in 2003. I figured if I had not used in 10 years, it is unlikely I would ever need as long as I can find the smaller models.

Hello Geo TH In,

I miss my lava rocks also. My 1972 Sears grill had them. I used that thing so much I kept buying more rocks as the heat broke them up in small pieces. Now I have no lava rocks in my grill, so I use wood chips. Mesquite is my first choice, oak and wild cherry come a close second. Happy grilling.....

Guido.

When that grease hits the steel covers you will have all the smoke taste you want. If you get a flair up you just turn the burner off for a little bit, re-light and keep on cooking. I use the out side burners on high and just set the center on on low most of the time, heat without the flair ups.

It works better putting rock in from old grill. Had to make my own grates for rock.

BTW, took my GMC to spring shop yesterday. They said the same thing you said. My front left coil is down an inch causing the right rear to be up, making the left rear look down. Have an appointment for them to repair it Tomorrow. You made a Good Call.
