Homelite Weed Eater Challenge!

Hello,

I had to think out of the box on this one. It is done!. It has lots of power now.
The challenge is now to see if any of you can guess what I did to make it right.
My original post has the clue. I gave it a work out, and burned most of one tank.
All is well.........

Guido.

Hello d beatty,

That would be a very elementary oversight on my part..............YES!

Hello,

I learned something new on this rascal. I though I pass it on. By the way, the smaller line lasts almost as long and the bigger one. So if some of you are looking for more horse power, try a smaller line. You will be surprised, I was. Mathias got it right! Hard to stump this board. I just took a guess and put 18Ft. of line on the spool I put the trimmer to test against a tree bark. It proceeded to start taking the bark off. I call that a success. The pictures tell the rest of the story. I just picked those flowers this morning, I hope will cheer up some of you who may be having a bad day. HAPPY FATHERS DAY TO ALL THE DADS ON THIS BOARD...........

Yup, classic case of can't see the forest for the trees. Lol! Here we are all trying to come up with solutions and it was as simple as the motor couldn't overcome the weight of the heavy line. (picture 200 YTer's making mental note: Weed wacker has no power......try lighter line first!).................(chuckle!)

No it was not the line that was the problem if Mathias was right because he talked about fuel not line. Line should not make a differance. I had an old Poulan (28 cc) and a Stihl FS-90 4-mix and have went to heavy line and noticed no differance in performance and did a better job on heavy weeds and brush.

I think he meant that I was correct in this thread, when we were guessing how he solved it. The fuel comment was in his previous thread.

Hello Donald,

I have never had to do that. Can't fight success though, although some will try!

Hello Mathias NY,

Thanks I thought I was going bunkers HA!HA!. By the way you and I have something in common. Well sort of.
I used to live in New York, Small world?

Asking for guesses helps surface several other possibilities that are worth discussing.

After reading this thread I tried thinner line on my trimmer, it actually did make a difference. I haven't seen a difference with non-ethanol gas but I did notice that changing the oil mix ratio can change things in a hurry.

Hello TomH in PA,

I'm glade you tried the thinner line. I would not play with the mix though. Easiest way to burn a piston. Use 89octane gas and tune the high speed like I described in my first post. You may also gap the plug at.030, like I did on this weed wacker. I also gapped the magneto @.012.After you do all that, go ahead and take some bark off a tree of your choice like I did with this one

Guido.

I agree with the advice to stay with the manufacturer's recommended oil mix. Some people think a bit more oil is better but that can make the engine run too lean (thicker fuel and less gas/more oil going through the jet).

Hello TomH in PA

You're right! More oil.then the recommended mix, degrades the fuel octane rating.
Engine Will go puff!. If the owner's manual was giving the wrong info, many manufacturer
Would go out of business. Most manuals, if not all, are quickly discarded though

having owned a couple used elect. whackers and now a Stihl gas , the Homelite must be one weak P.O.S if line makes a difference. Something else wrong if you have to use "fishing line" for it to even function. That leaves no reserve power for quack grass or any weed stalks. Not much drag on bark of tree compared to deep grass. Not buying that thinner string solved the real problem.

(quoted from post at 02:29:14 06/21/15) I agree with the advice to stay with the manufacturer's recommended oil mix. Some people think a bit more oil is better but that can make the engine run too lean (thicker fuel and less gas/more oil going through the jet).
I work on two strokes. I consider 50-1 ratio to be an EPA issue.
I know that two stroke oil is vastly improved but I always run and recommend adding 3 oz of [b:7d3b257fa3]PREMIMUM OIL[/b:7d3b257fa3] to one gallon of [b:7d3b257fa3]PREMIUM[/b:7d3b257fa3] non ethanol gas and tuned for that mixture.

I been using Opti-2 mixed with premimum gasahol for the last 15 years. For the last 3 years been putting Stratton fuel stabilizer in fuel. One mix covers all my 2cycle engines (7) and they burn clean and no stinky smoke and not a lot of differant cans of gas mixed setting around. It is the only 2 cycle lubricant outside of their owen that Stihl will honor warranty.

I go along wih you that weed eater has more problems than line. The standard line for that machine is .080" and he has to run .065" to get it to cut right. If it was running right it should handel the .080" line with no problems.

Good for you Guido.

I bought a refurb Homelite for $80. I never did get the line to feed properly, it ended up a tangled mess within 20 seconds of rethreading it. I damn near threw the thing away out of frustration. I put a Pivot Trim head on it with the three heavy barbed cutter lines and now it works, um, ok. It does cut well, but bogs quickly in heavy stuff like Queen Anne's Lace. It also doen't seem to rev out as well as it did the first time I used it. Maybe I'm going too heavy with the oil? I put in two caps of pre-mix oil for a tank.
