Winch For 12,000# Rated Trailer

Who makes a good electric winch for a 12,000 rated trailer? Does HF make a good one? Truth is, winch would seldom get used. I do have a fairly fast geared silo unloader winch I may end up using. Slow, but would certainly get the job done.

Caution on the ratings of consumer grade electric winches. If the tag says 10,000 lbs. It means that 5000lbs on the first wind of cable around the drum is about the maximum.

Add a snatch block to them so as to duologue up the cable and you get almost twice the pull power but half the speed. I have that set up on one winch I have and it works well

I have a big heavy one I'm going to sell, I don't know the exact rating but its huge and has like 3/8 cable and a huge drum. (Its NOT one of those wimpy kind like seen on Harbor Freight, more industrial heavy thing) I used to have it on my implement trailer and could winch decent size dead tractors on it. I used a 12 volt battery which was mounted right with the winch. It had what looked like a Ford 12 VDC starter motor on it. I need to get some pictures of it tomorrow maybe. I haven't used it in years but it worked last time I used it and its been in a dry shed for years.

Tne HF winch is a good one. Check any busy offroad forum. I use mine often, and loaded a 2.5 ton dodge coe box truck from 1969 onto my tilt deck trailer without a snatchblock today. Get the remote for loading without an assistant.

I've used a Harbor Freight 9000 lb winch since May 2007 and its gotten the job done...I use a snatch block to increase the pulling power..On hard pulls I stop and let the winch cool down for awhile..

I had one of the HF 12,000 lb winches and for $300 I paid for it,it did a good job. They have around 75ft of cable my trailer was 18ft long so I cut the cable down to about 30ft made it wrap closer to the center of the shaft so it slowed down the pull speed and gave it more power plus I didn't have to worry about how it was wrapping the roll.
