Scrapping A/C units

I have been scrapping some ac units that my son gave me 15 or 20 years ago. They are the units that go under the windows in motel rooms (I am told). The first two were no problem to figure out, but the third one has the copper tubing bent back and forth with stiff, fuzzy, looks like aluminum, I am assuming that it is to disperse the heat. Question, how to get this stuff off, or do you? How do you scrap this tangle of worms? Thank you.

Hello hermit,

It is aluminum. If you take a pointy knive and cut it from the copper, you can unravel it out.

It's like a rope with whiskers,
Guido.

The place where I sell will take them as are with steel ends removed. I have seen pickups loads brought in with only ends removed.

With the pricew of scrap what it is I'll keep what I have till it goes back up and maybe not even then. I look at it this way it can lay around till I have to have the $$ till then NO way I'll help China

Thanks for the help. The main reason I am trying to get rid of it now is the things seem to be in the way wherever I put the units over the years, and I am tired of having to move them. It doesn't help that I have been a pack rat all these years. "I might need that for something someday"!! Anyway, thanks for the replies.

Indiana has a law about scrapping central A/C's. If you are not in the HVAC business, they can't take your scrap copper. This is an attempt to prevent people from steeling A/C units sitting outside buildings.

A few days ago I was at the recyclers, they required my photo ID and took a pic of me too to put in their computer as proof my photo ID was a match.
