Hyd ram endnut/piston material

Trying to rebuild an old Hein Werner jack. The ram has an old style leather cup seal held in place by this piston (with is held on the ram end by a heavy duty spring ring). The problem is obvious... probably the result of prying out the ring with a flat blade. I'm looking at making a new one but wonder what type material I should or can use. Looking at the grain of this thing I'd say the original is cast or ductile iron. Can I just turn a new one out of aluminum alloy? Appreciate any advice and info

Have you found a new seal? If so aluminum or steel should work.

If you haven't found a leather seal, chances are you won't, or will have to make your own.

An alternative would be to go to a seal supply, find a urethane seal that fits the bore, then make a retainer to fit the seal.

But, be careful what material you get for the seal. It needs to be a jack seal. A regular poly-pack won't work, too much pressure. The seal will be a hard urethane, probably color coded blue.

Thanks, Steve. I was able to get the original style cup seals and packings for the ram and pumps. Amazing, since the jack was probably made in the 50s. Hard parts do not exist anymore - I have to make or fix whatever is broken.

I would use a piece of some sort of free machining steel. Aluminum might deform
under the pressure seen in a jack.
