what is it? i used this one with my dad for years,,,my brother said the other day when you come to feed the animals,I put some tools aside you may want,the old toolshed is in bad shape,its going to get tore down,

so ,,,I brought this home.

and a garden hoe,,,gave the hoe a sharpening

We used to call it a jitter bug used to tamp wet concrete to get the rock down from the surface and give a slicker finish with the bull float. Don't
see folks use them any more
 
My dad and I used one of those concrete tampers about 46 years ago to do his driveway. That is probably why my shoulders hurt so much now. We worked at it all day long as the concrete trucks came. I think it was 25 yards at about $15 a yard.

I remember using a "jitterbug" about forty years ago. We were constructing a building that was to be used occasionally for livestock auctions, and the owner wanted a rough surface on the path where his bulls would be walking.
 
They also make a new style one that is two rollers as wide as the jitterbug type, Only you roll it with a long handle like a bull float. Just the weight of it pushes the stone down.....Jim in N.M.
 
I agree with everyone else a thumper/tamper for compacting/setting.
I could use a thing like that. looks like it would make a good pusher for final cleaning out of hay/straw mows. Wide base for max load, two stable handles for easy holding, and hard pushing.
