2004 jeep grand cherokee transmission

I changed both the transmission filters in my 2004 grand cherokee, cleaned the pan, put pan back on and now it will not go into gear at all. I used atf +4 transmission fluid (5 quarts) and it reads full cold. it was giving codes indicating fluid pressure low. i did not do anything else (tighten nuts, bolts or anything else). I do not know if i need to let it run longer or what. the check engine light is on and I have not checked the code lately. could it have a sensor telling the computer it was low on fluid when I had the pan off, even though the the ignition was not on(no key in ignition)? any ideas? I have changed transmission filters on other cars without problems.

I did not add a link to my post and do not know where it came from. it to a centurylink page and there is no need to click on it. it has nothing to do with my post.

This is a stab in the dark..with GM's you can disconnect the battery terminal for a few minutes, then hook it back up. The computer will then reset itself..I don't know if this will work with Jeeps but it is possible. I can't imagine you did anything wrong, unless something in the pick up is air locked. I would let it warm up and try,try the battery reset thing..let us know how you make out.

Was the tranny acting up before the change ? If so your not the first guy to finish one off by changing the oil.

Checking the oil cold after sitting all night, it should read about 2 quarts overfull. Perhaps you have a deep pan, which most of the newer ones do,......takes 7 quarts after the filter change.

Not to send you to another site to take away from YTMAG, but I use these two sites for mt 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. nagca.org and jeepforum.com You will need to register to post, but registration is free. Good luck.

On most Chrysler automatic tras, the pump will only be engaged in neutral, not in park (like GMs); so I would put it in N and let it run at idle for a while and see if it starts to build pressure.

That is why the dip stick will say check with trans in N not park as it does on GM cars.

I notice after my car sits for a while the trans will not work, put put it in N and let it go for a sec and the converter will start to build pressure.

Try that cheep and easy... - if not I don't know, but you could ask at moparts.com - someone there might know...

It sounds like its probably a V8 with the 545RFE if you had that code and two filters?? Anyway first off make sure you didnt knock the linkage off of the trans or t-case if 4wd. Did you remove or replace the seal for the primary filter? The seal must be installed in the pump inlet, not the filter or it could be damaged. The trans should only need 5-6.5 qts doing a service so you should be good there or close enough for now.

Since you just serviced the filters, my guess is the primary filter gasket is not seated and pump is sucking air. You probable dont want to hear that since you would have to drop the pan and lose fluid.

I had installed the o-ring seal on the filter, not in the transmission housing causing the pump to suck air. several here responded with that answer. I also got the same answer on a jeep forum after I posted here. I dropped the pan again and reintsalled the o-ring the correct way and now it works fine. I have been having trouble with the transmission and the code reads low pressure. this might not fix that but it has been about 80,000 miles since the transmission fluid has been changed. thanks for the help.

One time, the auto parts store give me the wrong filter. It looked the same, but was deeper/taller than original. Not by much. Maybe 1/4" - 1/2". Just enough to seal off the bottom of the filter when the pan was re-installed.
