I didnt want to break the pipe,,good thing, didnt know a cleanout was there, would have ripped it out with a backhoe,,wasnt too bad,no rocks,,,and,,,,no blisters!

Just have to laugh because I had a project that started out just like that tree roots and all about 20 minutes into shoveling I decided to take care of it good. Went out to the farm grabbed the 590 super L and started digging up the yard and ripping the pipe up all the way to the clay main... That was the location of the major problem. Took off the old fernco tap saddle and busted a new hole in the main and sealed it up with hydraulic cement so I didn't have to worry about tree roots at the main and luckily at the time I was still working for a water and sewer contractor and had been for about 14 years so I "borrowed" a little bit of c900 pipe (super heavy wall same o.d. As ductile iron and super heavy slip gaskets) I think all and all the project cost me under $50 for the hydraulic cement and a Sunday afternoon. Even borrowed the skid steer and Harley rake to clean it up a couple months later and now I don't have to worry we I flush the stool

Moved last year to Mchenry county Illinois from my farm in western Illinois, where I had very sandy soil, no rocks to be found, anywhere, easy digging. Now we are where the glaciers dropped their loads of rocks and gravel at the end of the last ice age. Extremely hard digging by hand. Oh well, at my age I'm not doing much digging.

I bought a shovel at TSC once, and while checking out I asked the gal if instructions came with it.

The look on her face was priceless!

Shoulda mentioned, the ideal load in a shovel is 21 pounds. I learned that in college.

Actually, it came up in an efficiency study in a management class.
