windshield cleaning

Hello

What is a good way to clean a vehicle windshield. I have my own method. What do you guys and gals use. I need to.get the glass clean so I can put rain,x on the glass. The cleaner the surface the better the stuff works,

Guido.

Hi Guido;

Many years ago I tried to get pitch off the windshield of a fairly new car by using a brand new nylon scrubby sponge. It scratched the windshield glass---fortunately the scratched glass was restricted to the area above the line of sight---and I was never able to find a way to correct it. I probably could have rubbed the scratches out with the compound people use to grind telescope lenses, but it was easier to let my then wife drive it until she wrecked it---which was certain to happen, and did, soon enough. She was the worst driver I ever knew.

Anyway, don't use scrubby sponges.

My Dad always used a ammonia and water mix. To wipe he used news paper crumpled up. He always said something about the ink helped keep it from streaking.
Nowadays, I get lazy and take it to the car wash when it gets bad.

Guido I use Windex or Sparkle with news paper. As far as the rain,x I really like that stuff and I have found that the rain,x windshield wash works great and I never have to redo it by hand every time you use your windshield washer it applies over. Rain,x washer fluid is a little more expensive but worth it in my mind.

Believe it or not; Bonami. It is the same as a windshield cleaner GM sold (or used to). It scrubs road film off. You can tell when you did it right because the water "sheets' rather than bead up. It takes some elbow grease where the wipers don't touch but it works.

Vinegar works well and has been used to clean glass for decades. Shoot my grand parents used vinegar

In the good old days, a newspaper with Windex because of the oils in the newspaper ink. But years ago like the EPA taking the propellent out of WD40 that made it good starting fluid, they did the same with the inks in newspapers. Now, you're on your own.

Good luck.

Hello Mark-IN,
I guess I am. I use tooth paste, just make it thinner with water. Try it!

Guido.

YelloWstone in Oly, WA,

I use toothpaste, diluted with a wet rag. Just enough abrasion to cut through the grime.
Works on headlamp plastic as well. That is my trick!

Guido.

Hello,

I have used most if not all of the methods suggested. You should all try my method.
Toothpaste and a wet rag. Make it just liquid enough to spread. Let dry some, and wipe it down. Go over it with a clean and dry towel, as many times as it it needed. You can repeat the process if needed.

Ya'll be surprised!

Guido.

(blue)Windex comes with Ammonia added, other Windex(orange) had vinegar. Never use
windex/ammonia on your LCD screens.. vinegar type is Ok. either works on your
windshield.

There used to be a product called Mirror Glaze. It was intended to be used as a way to remove fine scratches from things like head light lenses and motor cycle helmet face shields. It works like the tooth paste method already mentioned. It had a very fine pumice suspended in a mineral spirit base and would cut through the road grime and oils. I used to use it all the time. I don't know if it is still around or not. Now I just use Invisible Glass, it works MUCH better than Windex.

Seems to me newspaper still works. Washed the windows in the house with Windex and paper towels. Sun hit it, looked horrible! Went back over it with vinegar and water, dried with news paper, got them crystal clear!

Guido,

Here's a funny one, the just opposite. When I was stationed in Germany I was screwing around some of my buddies and as they were driving off in a Jeep, I tossed a huge wad of mayonnaise across the windshield. Naturally they turned on the wipers to scrape it off. Almost immediately the windshield turned black. The mayonnaise ate the rubber on the wiper blades.

Many many years ago I got in a motorcycle wreak and had the face of my watch get scathed up real bad and I used tooth paste to clean it up and yes it dd the job

Hydrogen peroxide is safe and works great. It also eats up the bug splatters. I use it on everything including motorcycle windshield and helmet visor.

Newspaper still works fine. Cleaned cab windows with newspaper last night. One difference in newspapers from the past 20 years or so is the use of soy ink but i don't know if it makes a difference.
