O. K. I need to get the one boy some "basic" hand tools for some work he doing around his home. They are mostly for right now doing some carpenter work that most hardware stores would not stock. Who has a good catalog like that? Thanks in advance. J.

J. Schwiebert: quick clarification--what do you mean by "most hardware stores would not stock"? If all you're looking for is the basics, any decent hardware or home improvement store should stock most anything you're apt to need. Another place with a wide selection is Wholesale Tool. Yet another is Woodworker's Warehouse (woodworker.com) As mentioned, Lee Valley has excellent tools, but be prepared to pay for them. The market for high-quality hand tools (or at least high-priced--I've seen plenty that weren't much better than the low-end imports at 5 times the price--lots of buyers seem much more concerned with being able to say "that's a $300 plane" than they are in knowing how to judge whether or not it was worth it) has exploded in the last 10 years or so, and companies like Lee Valley or Veritas can easily sell you enough tools to fill a swimming pool, though you'd better make sure that pool started out filled with greenbacks! If you're looking for more specialized stuff, let us know what you're looking for and someone may be able to direct you further.

Order catalogs from Grizzly Tools and/or Woodcraft. Don't know about the boy, but they'll keep you occupied for days.
