Singer 6235 won't sew forward

My wife's Singer 6235 will only sew in reverse. The revers button won't pop out. I cleaned and oiled machine but looks like the part in up in top of machine. Any idea what is wrong / thanks for any help

I don't have an answer to your particular problem, but can tell you this much. Nothing worse than a computerized sewing, embroidery machine in the house. I had to learn how to sew, and diagnose stitch's etc. Thankfully, wife pretty much leaves it alone last few years as when you don't do it a lot the book has to come out all the time.

If you open up the plate around the bobbin can you see which way the feed dog is trying to pull? To go forward it should go down slightly, move forward, then come up and move back, which would pull the material backward, which is forward to the machine.

Will it go into neutral? Sometimes those linkages get sticky if sometime in the past they got too much oil and trapped dust. An air gun in the right place might be your friend.

I had a similar problem with mine years ago after it had sat unused for about 15 years. I had to disassemble a good bit of it and lubricate many things that aren't accessible with the covers on. I got it all freed up and made formal drapes for my dining room.

Im not familiar with that model but know the old machines quite well. With that said, I would look to see if the reverse button is sticking in the upper part of the machine or if the feed mechanism is stuck, not allowing the button to work. The feed mechanism is (or in the old machines are) in the base of the machine. Lay it on its back and remove the base. Roll the machine by hand, nice and slow. You will see how it works and the lever that needs to move to change from forward to reverse. Make sure thats freely working. Thats about all I can help, without seeing it anyway.

I would put the machine on the shelf, search for spare change in the couch and when you find $20, go to GoodWill or craigslist and get a nice old Singer. If you get lucky, you will have enough left over to hit the drive through for lunch on the way home.
