Battery question...

I have a power wheel chair that needs batteries.
It is supposed to have group 24 deep cycle batteries.
I can't afford group 24 deep cycle batteries.
The chair is 8 years old. I stripped a gear in my last chair.
So I could put new batteries in it and it die any day now.
Also, I'm on hospice and don't need it to last a long long time.
I just need it to get me through the day and recharge.
I would be real happy if it got me through the summer.

Can I use regular "car starting" batteries instead?
I don't want to pay too much for batteries.
They only have to fit in the same space as two group 24's.
And what battery is equivalent in size to a group 24.

Thanks.

would venture that you will be fine with regular auto batteries.

Sure.

They probably will not last as long as the deep cycle batteries if you deep cycle them regularly but they will work.

The set of batteries in it now are 13 years old.
They were the batteries that came with my first chair new.

"Group 24" is the physical size of the battery.

Do you know if the chair is 12 volt or 24 volt? If it's 12 volt, you might get by with one battery if it
isn't going on any long rides.

If you live near a larger city, there may be a used/reconditioned battery dealer. Could save you some money.

Sorry to hear your health problem. God bless.

Actually it is neither. It has terminals on top.
Like a lawn mower battery.

It takes two 12 volt batteries wired in series.

I'm not sure about the fit but I'd suggest trying 2 "lawn & garden tractor" batteries. This time of the
year they are often on sale at Menards, Walmart, Tractor Supply Stores, etc. for around $20 each.

The danger in using lead-acid car or tractor type batteries as opposed to sealed "gel cells" is that if
you upset the chair you may spill battery acid.

Another possibility: In the latest Harbor Freight sale flyer they have 12 volt 35 amp-hour batteries
with their solar power items that are exactly like the batteries used in many scooters & power wheel
chairs. The price after sale & coupon discounts is about $56 each.

As Mark pointed out the marine deep cycle batteries are reasonable in price. They will last longer than starting batteries before the plates crumble and short out.

I didn't know HF had batteries. I'd be afraid of those.

I can check our local Walmart. Sounds like a good deal.
That's about what I was hoping to pay for both batteries.
Batteries sure have gone up since I last bought one.

I called O'Reilly's and a group 24 with a 3 year warranty
is $115 plus $18 core charge. I trust their batteries more.
They have done a great job of standing by their warranties.

What it comes down to is how much money my wife is
willing to part with. I have a chair to get me around the house.
And it will go outside as long as I stay on paved surfaces.
But my old chair would go everywhere on the property.
That model of chair was discontinued before I got my new chair.
I like my new chair. But it won't go off road anywhere.

Pooh Bear:

You might try calling around to some of the larger Golf Courses. They use
Deep Cycle Batteries in Golf Carts, & you might be able to get some good,
used batteries cheaply if they know what you're going to use them for.

We decided this month we will build a ramp off into the garage.
And next month we will get batteries for my old chair.
I need the ramp more than I need batteries right now.

Group 24,,, there are two different group 24's a I-24 and a F-24... They both are the same size the difference is the battery terminal location... A group 24 bat is about as cheap as it gets now days a name brand auto battery will run $100  That's just the way it is this day and time...

My wife's wheel chair was donated by the church the bats were dead they gave me a 2/3 hundred to put bats in it... They were a small sealed bat it took 2 both were less than $200 (I am sure my interstate bat man cut me a deal).... She could ride it all over ell and haft of Ireland and she did a few times they never went dead...

I would think 2 group 24's would haul you were ever you wanted to go even 2 cheap 24's if you can find them cheap...

I think I am running as a back up on this puter 2 interstate 24 blems @$35.00 each... (they are the back up for 2 puters in the shop the other is in the office it has gel cells donated by the postal service  I ran the postal service off ( I could not handle the idiots that run it) my supply of good used gel cells went with them...

" What it comes down to is how much money my wife is
willing to part with." I understand that too BTDT... I did not like that lectric wheel chair I had rather push her around than deal with loading and unloading it and I had a nice van with a wheel chair lift... It did give her free range when she wanted to just make her rounds...
