I'm still not a welder - but

Thanks again to all of you who responded to my thread about trying to weld. I'm still not a welder, but I can actually draw a bead now.

I took the thread with me and tried welding again. I bought a new roll of Hobart brand .030 inch, flux core wire, moved my welder to within 5 feet of a 30 amp outlet that is within 25 feet of the power distribution panel, tried various speeds of wire and voltage settings, gently moved the wire in a circular motion when I struck the arc, insured that I had the right polarity, tried to watch the puddle more carefully, and other stuff that you had also recommended.

I feel good about doing my "farmer's fixing" now on a tailgate from an old trailer that I'm trying to put back into service.

Thanks again to all who helped.

I had some luck the first time I welded with mine. Then things went south. The clamp was not tight enough on the torch tension er. I hope it works better for me next time.

(quoted from post at 22:21:53 04/02/15) As with everything else,.....practice makes perfect;)

Absolutely. Even with many years experience I still save a scraps of the material i am going to weld to make sure my settings are good before doing the real weld.

I think those who pointed out about the polarity had a great posting . I did not think about the polarity reverse situation from flux core to gas sheilded. There are alot of good tips on here.
