fuel looses prime

I am helping a friend with fuel problem on a 1456(hope that's right I am not a red man). Anyway model is not important I want to put a inline pump like a micro mini or something. I have seen it done but didn't pay enough attention should I put in before or after filter and also what should I wire it too a toggle switch or key any pointers are appreciate d

If it is an IH 1456 I would look closely at the complete fuel system for other trouble, a supply pump is not needed when system is working correctly. There are other tractor models that do not use supply pumps either. He may need the injection pump serviced, need more info to go on..

Adding a pump may add pressure to the inlet fitting of the RoosaMaster pump which could change the timing advance in the pump

The pump will suck more fuel through the obstruction for only a very short time. It will still not pull a load with the pump installed.

i would start by changing both fuel filters & gaskets, bleed system. make sure you get a good stream of fuel from the tank. the roosa master has its own charge pump on the tail end; you shouldn't need anything else with a gravity fed system. with the engine shut off overnight and a full tank of fuel you should see seepage from any leak on the suction side. make sure the fuel cap is not holding a vacuum in the tank, and no garbage in the tank blocking the outlet.

I am amazed at how many times someone asks a simple question and many of the replies are all over the board except to answer his question. I have used several of these pumps with very good success. I would put it as close to the tank outlet as possible thereby pressurizing most of the system. This will not only help it not to lose prime but help you find any fuel leaks in the system. I would wire it into the key switch so that it is on when you turn the key on. Most come with a small fuel filter. I would discard this filter and use the original filter system on the tractor. This small filter is too small to do anything but stop up.

My concern is he may be putting a bandaid on, instead of repairing the real problem. IH 1456 does not need a supply pump when the fuel system is working correctly in the first place...

It appears that everybody else better just quit giving any repair advise.
