mcculloch pm 700 pre tension on recoil starter

Hello,
The little tang that is formed onto the end of the recoil spring may have broken off. If that is the case, you will have to remove the recoil spring and heat the very end of it with a propane torch lightly then bend a new tang on it. If I'm thinking correctly, if you turn the recoil the wrong way on a McCulloch, while trying to preload it, it will just spin and not grab. I keep my rope inside the recoil assy, spin it around until the sping is wound up all thd way, let 1 turn off it, then feed the rope through the hole in the recoil cover and tie the handle on it. Then I just let it wind the rope into the recoil on its own. I have several 700's, an 800, and a couple 10-10 PM's, and I have had to replace many recoil ropes and fix a few recoil springs, but they are great saws. As to my 800........there is no replacement for displacement! LOL
I love the power of an 80 CC saw.

How about a Mac 1000?? Yeh I know it was a Pioneer 100 then a Partner 100 then Mc Culloch wanted to have a real big saw in their line up. That is a pretty good 100cc beast. Run mine with a 4 and 1/2 foot power tip with 404 chain. And it is not that noisy.

recoil spring is ok. not broken. can not get enough pre tension. after 5 rotates i can hear slip. someone said there are two discs one above and one below rope disc. i dont see them in parts diagram. still clueless.

finally realized that silver filings inside of cover meant that rope pulley was rubbing against sprint end tang(that holds spring in place). added small washer underneath rope pulley and then filed top of rope pulley bolt and it works aok. was able to set pre tension by rotating it when pulley tang attached to spring. ugh but ok now
