Magnetic Starter

I have a used Delta Unisaw that I picked up several months ago. It's a major improvement over the 30 year old cheap saw I had.
But recently it has trouble starting or keeping running.
It has a nice 3HP 220V Delta motor. I checked the starter out, it is a Furnas. One contact has seen some arcing. I think the previous owner must have put the starter together out of a pile of mismatched parts. The starter has a transformer which is off by itself, I assume it is to reduce the voltage for the starter. Never seen one set up like that. There are no part numbers on the starter to identify the model.
So my question is can this be repaired or should I junk it and just get a new complete unit which matches the motor specs?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Probably be easier to get a new starter since you can't identify the one you have.

You'll need a size 0 or 1. Size 0 is good to 3 HP, going with a 1 will give a little more life.

Find one with a 220v coil and you can eliminate the transformer. Also need an overload relay and the correct heaters, sized to the name plate FLA.

The new IEC starters sometimes come with an adjustable overload relay. Easier and probably cheaper, but an older NEMA starter is heavier duty, rebuildable.

Ebay is a good source.

I need to correct, the starter sizes are for 3 phase. If yours is a single phase, step up to a size 1 or 2.

The old Furnas is a tough unit, and probably worth a contact kit.

And it's not odd at all for there to be a "machine tool transformer" to provide control voltage.

They are WAY more durable than the "euro-style" stuff sold today.

If you GOOGLE "Furnas contact kit", you should be able able to match it up by photos.

Also, look closely for a little metal ID tag on the "frame" of the contactor.

I would either sand or file the bad contact. While finding the right parts, I would jump out the bad side and use the good side only. As long as the motor is grounded, what can be the safety issue? Many 220 V central air conditioners, water heaters, and clothes dryers only break one side.

Now watch the code people say why you can't do it.
