wgm - Quincey

From the '70's -to the '90's , I had a Quincy compressor on my service truck. Tire service and mechanical work , it never required a single part in all those years .Just yearly oil changes. Pretty good record...

If you can't still get the industrial line of IR then I would go Quincy or Saylor Beall. They still make Saylor Beall in St. Johns , MI and have for 95 yrs. I would say between the two that Saylor will be lower cost.

These days not all Quincy pumps are made the same. They have their econoline just like everybody else. Luckily they still make the QR25 series, which is the Cadillac of reciprocating air pumps. Their lightest 7.5hp 2 stage pump, the 340, weighs about 400 lbs. Enough said, but there's a price tag to match.

I have a Quincy QT-5 series. 80gal 17.7CFM@100psi. It has the TRUE 5hp 1750rpm motor which really quiets is down a lot when it is running. It can keep up with my sandblasting cabinet which is saying something. I bought this to replace a smaller supposedly 5hp compressor that would not keep up with the sandblaster. It was worth the money!

Between the "Good" I-R and the good Quincy, the Quincy is the better compressor. Quincy is pressure lubricated as opposed to splash lube, some models even have spin-on oil filters. Quincy rates and recommends their compressors for use 24/7. Repair parts are readily available. Son bought a 5 HP 80 gal 2-stage Quincy two years ago. Had been installed new in 1968 at a big truck stop along I-80, then sold to and used at a body shop in the 1980's, then used at a small machine shop for the ten years before Son bought it. It does need the bores hones, rings, and valves rebuilt. Local compressor shop says they can have all the parts from Quincy in two days, $100-$125 tops.

The Quincy may cost more, but as it always turns out, You get what you pay for!

I would be worried about the tank condition on a compressor that old. I would make sure the tank has no rust before spending money on the pump.

Steve I bought a used Quincey for use at home. The only reason I bought it, it is their industrial model and the price was right. It does not have as fast of recovery rate as the type 30 IR. It runs my single 1/2" air gun ok. If I was still in a professional shop I would still go with the IR.
