Trying to figure this out....My 500 watt halogen flood lamp bulb bursts after every use. Works fine for hours. Turn it off & the next time I come back to it, the bulb is burst. I have no ides why. I have replaced about three bulbs. Ideas?

I had six 500 watt halogen fixtures lighting my 40X60 Ft. building. I have had them burn the ends off bulbs and have had them explode and take the lens out of the fixture. I have always put new bulbs in with a clean dry cloth. I have been finding the new bulbs have a short life span ( cheap or high priced bulbs). In the last few months I have replaced four of them with LED light fixtures and only pull 30 watts per fixture. The four halogen fixtures were pulling 2000 watts and the new LED pull 120 watts and the LED fixtures don't get hot like halogen fixtures.

Buy the good ones,"not HF", and always wash them with alcohol . Have no trouble with mine that way.

You talking the new bulb in a bulb or the old ones?? If the old one do you touch them with your fingers??? If you do that is why they burn out on you. Your fingers leave an oil behind that makes hot spots on the bulb causing them to break

You have to make sure the two ends are in the ends correctly that holds the bulb and don't touch the bulb but the fixture does not have to be level. I had 11 of these and tipped at differant angles. The ones that gave me trouble are upunderthe steel roof of building and burn out in summer. I am thinking the heat from sun on roof and the heat from bulb contribute to bulb failer. Most of my halogens have been up 30 years. I am weeding them out as they burn out and going to LED lighting fixtures.

As others have said, don't touch the lamp, also if the contacts in the socket are burned the ends will overheat and cause problems.

I would try different brands, see if you find a good one.

Also suspect the new lamps are of poorer quality. I've experienced that with "end of the line" products, like nicad batteries, magnetic ballasts, incandescent lamps, etc. As products reach the end of their practical or legal manufacturing days, the quality drops. Manufactures either outsource them to lesser companies, or turn their attention to newer replacement products and neglect the old equipment, drop the quality requirements for the raw materials and finished products.

Problem solved...I think. Bulb was loose in the socket. Bent the prongs together a little & it's now worked perfectly through 3-4 heat up/cool down cycles. I also cleaned the contacts very well. We'll see.

Thanks,
