IR compressor opinions

I bought a 80 gal 2 stage IR 5 hp 8 years ago. Not real happy with it. It has the high speed motor so is not happy when you run it lets say 75-80 percent continuous. Burned first motor first year when doing a lot of sand blasting. They gave me a new motor after a lot of hassle but I am a lot more careful now. If you have the electrical capacity I would sure go for the low speed (I think they are about 1725 rpms or so) rather than the lighter high speed motors,( 3450).

good to know. I have dedicated power for the compressor from 100 amp subpanel in shop. I need to feed a TP Scat Blaster cabinet. I'll follow up on the high speed low speed options for the 7.5 hp.

I did a lot of searching and finally dropped the cash for an Eaton Polar Air compressor at the Farm Machinery Show. They say they use a 10 hp pump with a 7.5 hp motor so they turn it slower. This means longer life and lower noise. At least that is what the sales pitch is. It should be built in the next few days so I will know more about them in the coming months.

Personally I would worry more about having an adequate branch circuit feeding it than about IR under engineering the unit. I have that same compressor and it takes #6 wire to run it properly if less than 50' from the box. I have run the blast cabinet all day long many times. Running amps is around 35 at maximum load, locked rotor (your starting inrush) is several times that.

We have one at our shop, I think we bought it about 5 years ago. No complaints here. We have used it to sandblast, paint and the usual air tools.

I think you can still buy the IR industrial series but not for TSC price. Mine is 5 hp (Baldor 1725rpm)continueous duty. 80 gal tank and T-30 compressor. This thing was $ 1725 back in 1981. the "box store" ones or any hi rpm ones, I would stay away from. Mine has seen daily use inc. blasting , and has made me a living since '81. Finally replaced motor a year ago, never has needed belts and compressor has never been apart. It's had some very heavy use. Best money I've ever spent.

We've got a 10 HP, 3 phase IR at the shop, been running about 10 years. It's been a good compressor. Had to replace the starter about 5 years ago, then recently had to put in a reed kit. But otherwise it's been trouble free. A little on the noisy side though.

I have the 60 gallon one I bought almost 10 years ago at TSC with a coupon. I think it's the SS-3 compressor and 5 horse motor. I haven't had any trouble at all with it. Gets typical farm shop use and occasional heavy use. I change the oil once a year and use the ridiculously expensive IR oil for it.
The tank is by Manchester, made in the US but the motor is from Brazil and I think the compressor is import too but I know not from where.

That is the same exact one I have. I run a Scat Blast cabinet with mine and it actually will pump up and stop running while blasting. Very happy with mine.

We had the Type 30 in the tire shop, along with several others running backup. Ran it almost daily for over 15 years. Would sometimes have 3 1" air guns running at the same time. We replaced several of the noisy backups, but never replaced the IR. I would not even look at another brand. Changed oil every 3 months, used IR oil, slow turning speed, not noisy just reliable.
