Weight of cement

Approx what does a yard of cement weigh. I got in a conversation with a guy at the coffee shop & we were talking about a chunk of cement 9' x 9' x 6' we were wondering about how much it would weigh. Thanks for all replies. Gerald

That's 486 cubic feet, or 18 cubic yards. For convenience, the weight of standard concrete is generally rounded to 150 lbs per cu ft, and 4000 lbs per cu yd. These don't generate the same result, but close enough since the weight of the aggregate can make a tremendous difference. At 150 lbs per cu ft, your block would weigh 72,900 lbs. At 4000 lbs per cu yd it would be 72,000.

I hauled concrete for a couple years. A normal 5 or 6 bag mix like would be used for shop or feedlot floors weighs around 3800# per cubic yard.

Now the heavy mixes with lots of big gravel or crushed rock and really rich with cement will weigh 4000# per cubic yard. Those mixes are used for highway pavement, bridge decks or overpasses.

The ingredients are all weighed for the batch so there may be some variation in volume from one mix to another, but volume from batch to batch of the same mix will be the same, or at least very very close.

The info in the original post shows up on my 'puter as 6 FEET thick.

Does it show up as 6 INCHES thick on yours?????????

One cubic yard is 3feet x 3feet x 3feet = 27 cubic feet.
At 150 pounds per cubic feet this comes to 4050 pounds.

You have 486 cubic feet of cement. That would be equivalent to 810 eighty pound bags of cement. I come up with a figure of 64,800 pounds.

if I remember correctly the rule of thumb for a concrete slab 9'x9'x4"=1 cu.yd.,there for you would have 1.5 cu.yd. at roughly 4000 lbs per yard depend on the type concrete
