i have a pioneer farm saw 2 that i am going to put on new magneto. chain saw manual shows easy arc decompression release near pull handle housing. i am not sure i understand how this works. anyone understand it better than me ?

You mean a coil? The FS2 didn't have a mag in the common sense, it was a "solid state" type ignition (no points) IIRC and the stock coils are reported to be very, very hard to find. As far as the decomp, it's a passage in the head that reduces compression via a small valve. The valve is supposed to shut once the saw starts running.

Actually, I don't think they are actually even called coils, I think the correct name is "pickup". But my remember-er isn't so hot these days...

compression release may trip even tho the saw doesn't start. In that event, re-set the release & pull the starter cord again. May be necessary to do that several times. The release simply makes it easier to start the saw.

I saw one of them there cheap coils on ebay for $973. No joke. Coils for homelite super xl is the same. They will all fail. Recoil on that model sucks for going out too. I kinda collect saws. Most dont run cause parts are to much. I just clean em up and look at them. I know they make some universal electronic ignitions for the older saws but never looked into it for any of mine. I pay less than 25.00 dollars for most saws. I just cant see spending to much on an old saw. I bought a new dolmar ps5100s for 375. Awesome saw. Smooth running and light. Its a 50cc saw that out cuts my 68cc old partner saw. I love looking at the old, but like to use the new. :D

If you go to the chainsaws section on arboristsite.com ans do some searching you'll comeon some fixes for those non-existent coils. I think there's an off the shelf coil for a Ryobi or something like that that is a perfect replacement.
