Vermeer 1600 Chipper Opinions

Anyone have experience using a Vermeer 1600
chipper? There's one for sale that I want to take
a look at. Ford 6 cyl. gas engine. Do these units
have self feed? If not, how hard is it to feed
brush into it?

Just looking for opinions on ease of use, or wear
points to be mindful of when inspecting it.

I googled a pic of it. Appears to be a drum style chipper.

Yes they self feed....at the speed of light. Also known as a chuck n duck chipper.

I have a woodchuck chipper in the same style. Not too bad once you get the hang of using it, but there is a learning curve. You will get smacked every once in a while and it hurts, especially when its cold out. They do chip fast though, especially nice straight soft wood like pine or maple. Not so good on the gnarly stuff like pin oak, but will do it if cut right.

Pretty simple machines. Big old drum with knives to do the chipping. When dull, they don't feed so well. I've changed a drum bearing on mine and a belt and all the normal maintenance stuff.

I'd make sure theres no cracks around the drum assy and that the drum bearings run smooth and quiet. Obviously, all the normal stuff on the engine. That probably has an over center clutch that shouldn't be much of a problem.
