packaging - a RANT

So the other day I went to the big box store for threaded hooks; needed to hang some banners. They had just the size in blister packs or 3. Now why would you package items in any prime number greater than 1? Then today while having coffee with the neighbor, I see some jig saw blades he just bought from the same store lying on the table. The blister pack had 7 sets of different blades; 2 of each type. Also included was a case to hold the blades once the pack was opened. The case consisted of 6 different compartments. Hmmmm. Seven sets of blades but only 6 compartments. Do they expect the buyer to mix blades [defeating the compartment principle] or simply discard the 7th pair.

So are they evil, stupid, or just screwing with us?

Why do hotdogs come ten to a package and the buns come eight to a package? Why do we continue to put up with these irrational plots that are made daily on our lives? One day I want to meet "THEY".

Many companies are/were reluctant to raise prices - so they just reduced the number of pieces, or ounces or lbs. and kept the price nearly the same.

The price of laundry detergent hasn't changed much at Costco over the years, but the pounds went from 40 to 36 and now it is 32 lbs. per pail.

That marketing, some may call it evil. Odd package contents(need 4 here's 3), the $X.9y, the milk and bread at the back of the store, the thing you actually need located on the top or bottom of display; all tedious market ploys (developed by who knows) to make you buy more.

Part #xxxx 4 required, packed three per package.

Part #xyz 6 required, packed five per package.

And you know darn well the parts guy will have a fit if you ask him to split the package, unless it is a REALLY popular part.

John Deere seems to do this regularly, other makes not so much.

bacon went from 16 Oz in a package to 12 Oz for the same high price. Why arn't we sending emails to the people packaging the bacon and the head office of that store protesting the change same with gas prices why aren't we doing the same?

Yep plum hate BLISTER packaged hardware , they do this to sell you more then ya need and they know you will buy it just to get the job done . Just like when you go to the auto parts places for miniture light bulbs they come in varying amounts and the price is a lot higher then if YOU would buy a box of ten . Now here iin my area even NAPA wants to sell you either a blister pack or one at a time and if you want a box of ten they want the the price of one bulb at list times ten . Same as buying wood screws at the big box stores . I use a lot of wood screws in the winter months in the wood working projects and i now buy them where i buy my bolts and nuts . One time i was replacing the old hand rail on the basement steps with a new heavier duty one and new stair treads after the the War Dept fell down them . I needed some #12 x3 inch wood screws Homer Depot had them in blister packs of three for like over two bucks a pac. Ain't noway i am paying that . Went to the nut and bolt place and asked if they had wood screws and yep they did got a box of 100 for less then five bucks. A little looking can save you money . Needed parts for my Ariens ST 724 snow blower , needed a bushing and a bearing , From them it was over SIXTY BUCKS AND HAD TO WAIT FOR SEVEN DAYS . BDI had what i needed and with tax it was 8.56 and had it the next day.

Because I raise my own bacon! I also buy fuel in bulk when prices are down. With them inching up I keep filling everything and then topping off the big tanks. Sooner or later we will be back to where we were and then I will be mad about filling all of those big tanks.

Get Brats instead of hot dogs- they come 8 to the package. Now you have the right number for hot dog buns. In the mean time some bakeries have 'large' buns 5 to the pack that can take 2 skinny hotdogs- or the 5 to the pound pack Italian sausages. RN

"Why do hotdogs come ten to a package and the buns come eight to a package?"

That's simple - 8 for the Family & 2 for the Dog or Cat.

Sorry! I didn't read far enough down, you beat me to it. Still the best answer. LOL

OH, PS. - My Goat "Bambi" LOVES Hot Dogs, in the bun with Mustard, Catsup, Chopped Onions, & Pickle Relish, and Coca Cola in a bowl or wide-mouth-cup to wash it down with. LOL, What a Goat!

I know what you mean about looking. I needed a Lovejoy coupling for my MTD snowblower and Lowes wanted $100! I found the exact same item at Graingers for $10!
