router for internet

I have a netgear I bought it at walmart had it a year. And the darn thing is giving me fits. One moment its working and the next min- it quits. Suppose to have a lifetime warranty but you have to live in China and have 5 kids -their names all have to start with hoe. I guess I'm just trying to find 1 that works. What do you use

One word... Motorola.

Netgear is great, but only if it is a metal cased
product. The stuff in the plastic housings are the
cheap stuff.

Reads like you want a low cost wireless router that is reliable for the least monies. I have had great success with D-Link and Linksys routers, mid price range vs low end. Check out this link:

Rates the top 10 low cost routers ( No AC routers).

Remember, you get what you pay for. Range, High speed fiber connection, AC vs N Std, ease of setup, etc.

I will assume you are talking about a WiFi router. If so, I have an ancient Linksys WRT54G. Been in use for several years. Recently started throwing hints that maybe it is getting tired, so I picked up a NetGear AC 1200. Never could get it to work like I thought it should, so I sent it back for a refund. Picked up a TP Link 300N on Amazon for $20., and it works, but does not seem to have as much signal strength as the ancient Linksys. Right now I have both of them up and running on 2 seperate networks.

I was very skeptical of a WiFi router for just $20, but so far, it is doing what I need it to do.

That's the same as hours, must be 6 or 8 years old, a couple times a year it acts up, unplug for awhile and its good again.

After my previous router died last year I found a Western Digital N900 on sale. It has been trouble free for Windows 7, Windows XP and Wi-Fi.

I have no idea what the fellows expertise was but the one guy at Staples told me a good one for my factory office was a Belkin. That was about four years ago. No problems so far. I replaced a D link that was giving me fits. I have a super doooper twin antenna deal upstairs here at the house which I think is a D link from Walmart. It works in most areas of the house but not all. We had a Netgear here before that had to be reset quite often. I tried to get help from Netgear but couldn't understand what they were saying and gave up and bought the D link after several calls.

Replaced my Linksys WRT54G last week with a Belkin N450 DB. Easy setup and working fine so far. I would suggest going on Amazon and look at customer ratings, that will steer you to something that works.

I had been using a Linksys Model WRT120N wireless
router for the past four years - worked good until
about a month ago when it started acting up.
Replaced it with a Linksys N600 dual band wi-fi
router, so far it works great. I'm in a separate
building about 100 feet away from the router &
with two metal-clad walls between us.

Our 8 year old Linksys started dropping out awhile ago. Our Geek got us an ASUS. He said though it costs a little more it is worth it.

Dr. Walt, how do you get the signal to go through 2 metal walls? Are you using some sort of range extender?

My Walmart unit had only 1 yr. warranty. I found this out after spending 45 minutes with their tech support and working thru all the warranty registration forms. He said that was all he could do as the unit was by then 1-1/2 years old. Definitely talking to a outsourced tech/phone (India) support though. bjr

Don't really know HOW it does it, but it does. Works
GOOD too, with NO range extender.

That is good to know. My old Linksys WR54G seems to have more signal strength than my new TPLink N300, but even when using the Linksys, I need a range extender to have internet throughout my metal building.

First of all, this is not intended to be an ad, I'm just stating my experiences.

Where I work we sell TP Link products. In the past five years we have had one (1) wireless router returned because it was "defective". Being the hard head he is, one of our salesmen took the "defective" one and installed it in our system at the store. Still working fine after two years! So the only defect was due to operator error.

This is to say these things seem to be pretty reliable, we sell the whole range with no antenna up to three antennas, including the dual band versions. There are also external antennas available (simple plug and play) that can help with dead spots in two story houses and ones with metal barriers.

All that being said, I'm using two ancient Netgear routers in two houses about fifty feet apart and a third Netgear extender in the house on the other side of me, all working pretty good. I got these before we started selling the others, maybe 7 or 8 years ago. The extender was added about two years ago, mainly because I thought it might work better to have the same brand. The initial setup was painfully complicated, but I have not had to redo anything since.

If they start giving trouble I'll change everything at once to the TP Link.

The one I have is a netgear N300. It quit working I got a little mad and slammed it into the table top. It started working again but I bought a new one It's a linksy E4200 off Ebay should be here in a couple days. Thanks for your suggestions- Dave

My Netgear has been very good, but the tranmitter got turned off once, somehow. Gave me fits until I went through all the settings and found that turned off. Once on it continued to work just fine.
