Spoke too soon about computer problem...

Installed new modem yesterday that really did speed up the computer online. However, if we have been on the computer for quite awhile so it has warmed up, if we disconnect from the internet and then try to re-connect, it just brings up a white screen and can't seem to re-connect. After the machine has sat for awhile and cooled down, it will connect to the internet again.

Software or hardware problem???

Have you cleaned the dust bunnies out of your computer lately? Most computers throttle the CPU when it gets too hot. Pay careful attention to the CPU heat sink, and make sure all the fans are working.

How long has it been since you cleaned out the inside of the case?

You should do that once a year. Dust will collect on the heatsink/fan that cools the CPU and it won't cool the CPU properly.

On a lot of systems, that will make the CPU run at a lower speed and slow down the whole system. Kind of like a newer car going into failsafe mode.

When you clean the inside of a computer DO NOT USE A VACUME CLEANER. Static builds up from the moving air in the tube, and can do bad things to the computer's components.

Use canned air, or an air compressor with the PSI dialed back to around 30 PSI or less.

The dust bunnies made their home on my cooling fins on the heat sink.

Are dust bunnies friends of the sock monster, the monster that steals just one sock?

I think they may be the same or good friends, because I find where dust bunnies have been along with missing sock, under the bed.

Sometimes a complete rebuilding of the operating system will bring it back to its childhood. You seldom will be able to take an old machine and make it a new one. Be sure to save all documents and important files in the cloud or on a USB drive.

Sometimes an old horse is just that. It gets replaced by a younger horse or if you can afford it a colt.

Pulled the tower out, took off the side and there was barely any dust inside after 4 years. Moved the tower from the bottom shelf to the top the desk for a bit better air circulation. Both fans turning so quiet that I can't even hear them.

Guess I'll keep looking for the problem and continue to use this computer; it's not that big a problem if I use it right.

If the dust bunnies are on the cooling fins of the heat sink, then your problem just might be that errant sock draped over the Mother Board. LOL

Some time back. I posted a few questions here about problems I was having. My motem would not connect to my PC.
This problem came up two different times and after doing all suggested checks and cleaning PC of dust, problem somehow just went away, and it worked fine.
A few months ago--same problem!!
I decided to just switch all connections to different ports where I could.
This didn't help. After a few hours of "thinking", I decided to switch connecting ends of the main cable going from the PC to the motem. I was lucky that the cable ends were the same and was removable from the motem.
IT WORKED and there has been no problems since.
Makes me wonder how many computer components are trashed when the connecting cables are the problems---Just like automotive electrical problems.

WOW, That explains why there was a sock inside my computer. Gives a new meaning to put a sock in it.
