Winter wiper blade

I don't think there is such an animal, I live in rainy country and it seems I'm always replacing blades they don't seem to last as long anymore.
Used to buy a rubber refill now have to buy whole blade. They have improved them so much that they last ½ as long and they more they cost the worse they are.

They do make winter wiper blades. I don't think they last any longer or work any better than a normal blade and the cost about twice as much.

If you do find a blade that lasts more than 6 months, let the rest of us know. I haven't bought a decent set in the last ten years. I am amazed that you are getting a year out of them. I don't expect they are good for much the last 4-5 months, are they?

I have been buying Bosch clear advantage wiper blades. Seem to get at least 2 years out of them and they do a good job of wiping the window too. Have been buying them from amazon. I know I wont buy the cheap anco ones anymore.

Add some rainx orange washer fluid and you won't have to scrape your windsheild anymore either. It keeps the film on your window to repel the rain without the work of the original rainx product.

Manufacturers say replace every 6 months. I'am lucky to get 1- 1 1/2 years out of them. They will last longer if you park your vehicle out of the direct sunlight when not in use.

The wiper blades on my car are pretty easy to change, so I pull off good working winter blades in spring and put them back on the next winter. They last for 2 or 3 winters that way.

Summer sun and heat seem to bother winter blades more than regular blades. I wonder if they are made of softer rubber, like snow tires.

My son and I each got "winter wiper" blades from our local "NAPA" store, boy are they nice. I will leave mine all year long. The two pair cost about $40 with the tax

What happened to refills? Autozone used to carry refills in the back. I don't think they do anymore.
I just buy the next to the cheapest ones from Wally World these days, and maybe the third from the cheapest for the OL's car.
I am not spending 40 bucks for wipers.

Bosch are nice , Valvoline [ K-Mart] not so good. Trico good. You can also recondition them by rubbing the ozone off with 320 or finer grit.

My big 'peeve' with wipers is, with all technology available, why can't we have a heated blade ????
Get the ice off ! Wipers are same as the lady designed them 100 years ago. (or so)

I put a set of the new type winter blades on my 93 Ford Truck and the left one streaked right where I needed to look through while right one was perfect. Switched sides with the blades and same thing. Bought cheapest set I could get at Advance Auto to get home with and they worked fine. Took the others back to Autozone for refund and clerk told me a lot of that type blade gets returned when installed on older vehicles. They were the new plastic one piece type with no exposed metal.

I use anco winter blades year round, at 6 bucks a piece I repurpose them as heat. usually get a couple years outa them. I find the pins seize and won't flex before they ever wear out.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed even wiper blades don't last near as long as they used to. 2 sets per year now, used to get 1.5-2+ years out of a set.

I put silicone blades on my Nissan pickup.
They have been wiping for several years but they cost more than a regular blade.

DE-ice and ANTI-ice fluids.

Most drivers are not trained, early, about using the procedures for iceing up blades like we are in the professional aviation world.

Use "anti-ice" fluid to keep the blades from accumulations of ice and "de-ice" fluids to keep the ice from building up on the windshield surface, along with constant defrost (warm air) on the windshield.

These fluids should be in the washer container at all times.

Winter fluids whould be high level alcohol content and summer fluids have less content.

Better still, try putting JACK DANIELS in the container.

Seems like I have had the same problem over the years. I buy a set of blades and they last about a year before they simply will not wipe clean anymore. So, I replace them, and the story repeats. Then, I bought a car at an auction about 3-1/2 years ago. Still has the same blades as the day I bought it, and they are still working perfectly. I'll have to look them over carefully when they do go bad to see what they were so that I can get more like them.

BTW, to answer about the refills.....
Back in the day, there were TWO outfits that made replacement wiper blades. Trico and Anco. Refills only needed to know the length and brand for a correct replacement. Then, a dozen other outfits began to make wiper blades. Some foreign, some domestic. None of the inserts were interchangeable. As a result, parts stores had to stock too many different refills to be practical. Quicker and easier to sell whole blades. Better customer satisfaction as well.

Wiper blades last a long time but they only last a few minutes when you turn them on and the are frozen to the windshield. Washer fluid needs deicing and lubricating technology ( Rain X) Cheap washer fluid and ice and snow destroy them. Mine last 3-4 years constantly , using CARQUEST Blades

I still have the same car since 2001, 14 years and on my third, yes 3rd set of Tripple Edge silicone wipers. They are working well. 150,000 New England miles.

Even though all wiper blades are made overseas, Anco wiper blades used to be in Michigan City, Indiana. A couple of years ago Anco's owner, Federal Mogul decided profits were not large enough so all of Anco's production was moved to Juarez Mexico. About 800 jobs gone forever.

I buy Rainex (sp?) middle of the price range and use Rainex orange fluid. In Texas we don't get all that much ice and snow but when we do all I have to do is make sure my wipers are unstuck before turning them on. I get a couple of years out of them before they start getting hard from the sun. Work really well.
