A fellow asked me to look at his snow blower. This was a Toro 3hp 2 stroke. He said that there was something wrong with the starter. My curiosity got to me, and I went to look at it. It had a recoil starter. Hmmmmm not much to go wrong there, so I set the choke, hit the primer, and went to pull on the starter handle........

OOPS!!!! locked up tighter than Ft. Knox. So I asked him if he had mixed the fuel. Got a blank look from him. I told him that this one needed oil mixed with the gas. He told me that he just put gas in it and ran it.

So, I told him it needs an engine. He said to scrap it. Seems a shame to do that since it is brand new. I'm tempted to put an engine in it and keep it for myself. I suspect that it may just need a piston, rings and cylinder. I'm debating whether to try to fix it or just see about a replacement engine. Any ideas out there?

Grab it. You might just be able to free it with a soak of ATF or something. Done it with a couple of chainsaws. One lost a little power but the other ran just dandy!

I would look up the parts and prices and look up the price of new engine and go from there. The parts and your time might be more than the new engine. He may have did some damage to bearings in that engine.

Hello Jimg.allentown,

Can't be to hard or expensive to put in new guts, especially if the rod is intact. It may have not run long enough to be that bad, Grabg it and see, can't beat the price!

jimg.allentown,Pull the jug off of it and inspect it and the piston to see how bad it is.You might get lucky and all it will need is a new set of rings. The jug honed, and piston might clean up.

Try pouring some ATF on top of the piston to see if will break free. Hal
PS: I bought a chain saw that was stuck for $25.00 and that's what I used. It sawed a lot of wood and I sold it for $50.00.

Look up "Jack's Small Engines" on the internet . He has all kinds of parts for all kinds of engines. He is in Maryland.

Start by pulling the muffler so you can get a good look at the piston side wall. I second the recommendation re Jacks. If I recall, they used to have manuals for free download on a lot of engines. I've saved a couple chainsaws with a piston/jug kit. Sometimes you can muratic acid the jug and get away with just a piston or just rings. Good luck. Not a tough fix at all.
