Forced air heater

I have a forced air heater that I run diesel in instead of kerosene, I never noticed it until this year that it leaves a lot of diesel fumes and smoke, is there something to check out or do I need a new ignitor plug

It should smell just like a diesel tractor in the shed if it does not have an exhaust pipe (chimney)vented outside. #1 fuel oil will be cleaner and K1 kerosene will be as good as it gets. A propane unit will be better (at least different). You need to have a window or door open partially or at least a lot of air leaks thru the doors and walls.
Beware of Carbon Monoxide. At least with those you should probably get sick before you get dead!

Its probably time to pull the covers, check filters, blow the dust out of everything and check the fuel lines for cracks. Probably not the igniter if its turning on and stays burning. Smoke and fumes more than likely due to incomplete combustion, excessive fuel, low air flow or dirty/clogged injector not spraying/atomizing very well.

K1 (kerosene) is your friend! They make it for a reason! It burns clean! It is made to burn clean in your heater so use it and enjoy! Armand

Diesel fuel in a kerosene heater, I would suspect using a too heavy fuel is the problem. Drain and fill with kerosene . After the unit has been disassembled and the soot cleaned out.
Kerosene is not that expensive .

Can happen with propane too! Back in 1968, my dad and 3 other teachers went to a cabin in Canada on a fishing trip. They all got sick right after arriving at the cabin. Wrote home about how bad they were feeling. Then they took a nap.

Carbon monoxide poisoning from a propane fridge.

They all 4 died!

The Jet A-1 here at the local airport is close to the price of highway diesel and much cheaper than kerosene by the pail from the hardware store.

Please remember that CO is cumulative over a period of time. You can get some today and a little more each day for a week and suddenly get sick and die. It has a greater affinity for the red blood cells than Oxygen. Auto mechanics have gotten sick and died over a period of a week or two from this, not just a one time deal. Bad stuff.
