f150 problems

we have a lady that has an F150, sorry I don't know what motor, that just dies going down the road, may die in the middle of the interstate, intersection, parking lot, driveway etc. has anyone else had one that does this? if so what did you do to correct it.
 
You don't state what year it is, but my brother has a 2007, his fuel pump regulator went bad. It's mounted on the frame near the rear axle.
 
Had a 2001 F150 that did that. Had it to several shops and Ford. Finally just got rid of it. If you needed wipers on. Turn on the wiper switch kick passenger door.
 
I also had a Taurus that did that exact thing. I had to stay in the right lane on the expressway for fear of failure. It was the fuel pump in the tank. I think Ford wanted about $300 for the pump and fuel gauge transmitter. I got just the pump from Advance Auto Parts for about $60 and dropped the tank and replaced it. I later sold the car to a friend and they have now driven another 150,000 miles without a failure.
 
Plenty of "short answers" here, but they will only lead you into the "shotgun" approach.

DO SOME DIAGNOSIS!!!!!!!!!

Start by checking fuel pressure. Invest in a cheap tester (Harbor Freight has them VERY reasonably priced) and drive the truck with the gauge attached. See what goes on with the fuel pressure when it acts up. If the fuel pressure stays OK, look at the ignition system. if not, look at fuel pump replacement.
Crank position sensor is a prime candidate if it has distributorless ignition. If that sensor fails it will set a code in the computer. If it has a distributor, the TFI module and stator are good candidates for replacement.
There are other things that can cause this problem, like sticking EGR, ISC motor sticking, vacuum leaks, and the list goes on...

In any case, there is no short answer. What caused a similar problem in another vehicle may not be the problem in this case.

You can also ignore my advice, and spend a fortune on parts that may not fix the problem.
 
We've done the diagnosis, had it to ford trained mechanics 4 times, its one of those problems that show up occasionally. That's why I am asking.
 
My 06 Dodge 2500 did that when I first bought it. I told the dealer, it came with a year bumper to bumper warranty, it was the ECM. Took it back to them 3 times. Finally put a new ECM in, and it never acted up again. I traded it at 190000 miles.
 
I had a 94 ranger that would do that especially after gassing up. After several failed attempts by 4 different ford shops where the computer said every thing was fine I gave it to the last mechanic and told Him to keep it and run the dog---t out of it I don't want it back till We find out what the problem is. After 2 weeks He called and said He had cleaned all the connections and it ran fine then suddenly died. He tracked it down to the fuel pump fuse. The fuse was good so He tried a new fuse block-same thing After messing with it for a while He discovered that if it dies and You pull the fuse and reinsert it You can hear a click and it would fire right up again and run. When He called Mother Ford they told Him to replace the entire wiring harness as that is where they had problems. I drove it for a few more years using the fuse trick because I wasn't going to pay what they wanted for a new harness and installation. Finally I got tired of it and didn't want to give anybody else headaches with it and so it made its final trip into the crusher.
 
Sometimes you have to use the shotgun approach. I bought the fuel pressure gauge and the scan tool for the Taurus. I had the car in two different Ford dealers and two independent shops with great reputations.
My car stopped with my wife several times at red lights or on the road. By the time I got there it would start right up. It stopped on me on the expressway doing 75 mph. I pulled to the side of road and opened the hood and got out my tool box and meter and had my wife try to start and it started right up and did not stop again until about two weeks later. Ford wanted $600 to replace fuel pump and independents wanted $400. That is why I went for the $60 pump only. I later found out that Ford had some manufacturing defects in the pumps in the mid 90's and they did not want to recall. The fuel pump in the tank is not the easiest thing to change but it beats being stranded on the road. I do not what year that F150 is or if that model has the pump in the tank, but I would sure eliminate that pump first if it is that intermittent.
 
Unless it is something they are attached to and just love it, I would take it and trade it. Years ago my wife had a car that would die at random, then restart later. Took it to a reputable shop several times, then another shop and best advice was to take it and trade it off. We did figure out that it had to do with the wiring, and the fuel pump was losing power. Wired fuel pump so that it was on full time when switch came on, drove to a dealer and traded it, and it never caused us another problem :).
 
Wife's 06 GTO did the same thing. It ended up being the computer. Gm replaced under warranty, which was, I think, 5 years on it. You didn't state much info on the vehicle, but some parts have longer warranties than the standard vehicle warranty. That may be worth a look.
 
Well, if you run it with a fuel pressure gauge attached, it will allow you to either confirm or eliminate the fuel pump as the failing part.
The only really SURE way to know which part is causing the problem is to catch it in the act, and prove it at that time. Once you prove or disprove the fuel pump, that leaves the ignition system as the most likely problem.

BTW, whatever happened to an '06 GTO or a Dodge truck will have no relevance here. Yours is a different vehicle with different parts and different characteristics.
 
Wow ,Now that is inflation,from the time of one post to the next post.That fuel pump increased from $300.00 to 600.00.
 
The $300 price was for the assembly only at the dealer. The $600 price included the labor if the dealer installed. The point I was trying to make was that I ended up buying the after market pump motor for $60 and re-using the fuel gauge sender. Ford only sold the assembly with the pump and sender. I did the labor which required draining the tank and removing to install the pump. It probably took me several hours longer than a shop with a rack. This was probably about 1999 or 2000.
 
what year is it. I got a '06 f150 that did the same thing. turned out to be the fuel pump regulator. it's tucked up under the spare tire
