Kerwin, My idea of a wire wheel on motor

All made from used parts. Cost nothing. Better than my 8 inch dewalt grinder with a wire brush, which wants to hurt you, grab things out of your hands and send them flying across the room.

Motor is 1/4 hp 1750 rpm. Plan to make another one for the pole barn. This one is on wheels so I can take it outside and leave the mess outside. Same with grinders, welders and saws. Do most of my work outside or near the door and blow the junk outside.

I could not live without a motor mounted wire wheel or two.

Great for cleaning parts prior to priming/painting, removing old gasket residue, etc....

In years past, I've polished many aluminum manifolds and AFB carburetors with a similar wire wheel.

Great use for used brake drum. Ingenuity at its best. Don't forget to use your face guard to protect against flying wires for your wheel.

My momma didn't raise no fool. Well take that back, I have brothers and sisters. I took an old welding helmet, removed the dark lense, use only the clear window. You may see part of it hanging on the post. Look at the bottom of pic. So much for a face guard. I have a complete head and neck guard.

Nice job George! Looks like a section of house trailer frame under the motor. What is the bright plated bolt for? Did you have a tool rest on it at one time?

Hope you don't mind if I steal your idea. Mine is bolted to a bench, and it gets the surrounding area nasty.

Yes agree. I have two motors, 4 shafts, used for polishing and cleaning. The secret is LOTS of different gauge wire wheels, and lots of cotton wheels. and 4 grades of pumice.

Good eye. Yes HM frame. I have about 50 ft left for other projects. I post my ideas for everyone to use. Isn't that what YT is for?

Looks like a nice set up. Really like the brake drum guard ! Might be hard to find a motor with a long thread shaft though ??

One suggestion. Get yourself a twisted knot wire wheel to try. They hold up better and don't throw out the wires near as bad.

Thats a great idea for a guard, assuming its strong enough not to fracture if something hits it hard ? Its cast right ?

I have a very similar motor with a grinding wheel, mounted on one of the work benches from our ford dealership. The motor has the 2 oil tubes, reminds me of a Bell & Gosset circulator motor. I don't use it much, given the no guard. Be nice to see how you mounted yours, I probably have an old brake drum somewhere around here. I really like the old work bench, given its history and the guys that used it.

Hi Mike - not sure what George used, but here's an adapter similar to mine. Pretty common, they're available in different male and female diameters, and also right and left hand threads. Relatively cheap, too. Seems like around 6 or 8 bucks for the most recent one that I bought. Good hardware stores stock them.

Yes, I broke a thick one of Turkish manufacture on my 850 ford tractor, factory one would probably not break, they are different materials, thought it a valid concern give the rpms and mass of some of these grinding wheels, tin would stop it certainly. Was not being critical just asking is all, having the same thing on work bench with no guard, was like that when it was in the shop way back when.

Look closer, this is a 6 inch wire wheel turning 1750. What is going to fly apart, a piece of wire?

My 8 inch dewalt grinder turning 3600 only has a tin guard. That would do some damage if the stone broke. So far, I've never broke a stone wheel on anything.
