Field glasses (pics)

Hey guys.

I picked up a set of field glasses at the local pawn shop.

The center hinge was frozen and I got them for $10.00 and a couple of days with penetrating oil and they freed up.

I am a bit amazed at the clarity and quality of the optics. They are almost as good as the Steiner glasses we used where I worked.

They say made in USSR, possibly military?

Does anyone know anything about these?

From a few minutes search on the web, all positive reviews as a quality product nice find better than nice price.

The russians "borrowed" a lot of german technology at the end of WW2. Victor's spoils. Anyway, nice meat and potatoes kinda binos. A frozen hinge is better than a loose one. Happy viewing..

The russians also used a lot of radioactive glass for optical equipment that can emit gamma radiation.

Maybe that's why they were so cheap!

I don't really know what the danger is, I would imagine you don't have much to worry about.

I just remember always reading warnings about old russian glass in old telescopes and microscopes, etc.
