air compressor motor

I have a 60 gallon upright air compressor that the motor keeps cutting out on (thermal overload pops out) after about 20 seconds of running... motor is a 230 volt 15 amp unit, and when it runs it sort of sounds like it isn't spinning the compressor over fast enough.

Any ideas on fixing or is it a chuck it and get a new one??

Oli,I agree with Hanky,Look at the start/run switch.Stuck, springs broken, points stuck together.fly weights stuck.

really not sure to be honest... compressor pump doesn't sound like it is at it's normal run speed, so i'm thinking the motor is running slow for whatever reason...

Sounds like the motor winding is going bad.Mine did that, would not kick into high gear. The capacitor was good, the winding was bad . Replace motor.

Have you taken the belt off and felt the bearings in the motor and compressor? If there is radial play in either, it could be dragging and over amping the motor.

Try running the motor with the belt off, see if it trips out or makes any strange noises.

If the motor checks out, turn the compressor through, see how it feels. If nothing loose or binding, pull the head(s), look at the valves, check for carbon buildup in the head or the line feeding the tank.

Agree, not coming up to full speed, sounds like start windings are not being removed. See if windings are black or smelled burnt. Take motor apart and look at end switch.

If you replace it, get 1 that is rated for an air compressor. there is a huge difference between those and a farm duty rated motor.

Take the belt off and make sure the compressor is free, and oil level ok, etc. I had a similar scenario, and found out my compressor had ran low on oil, and pretty well ready to lock up. I took the compressor apart carefully and was able to free the compressor up, put it back together and filled with oil, and runs fine to this day and that was a couple years ago. May not be the issue at all, but sounds similar. I check oil in the compressor more often now, as it does blow by a bit of oil.
