Flood light question

Can anyone recommend a good out door flood light? One that will come on with motion, will stay on and will last for more than 3 years? In 15 years I must have replaced the flood light on my home 5 times, there all china made junk that don't work right or don't last. Iv looked out side when it's windy and the thing will be on, I walk up the driveway in the dark on a calm night the thing dosent come on. I'm sick of dealing with these cheap ones! Thanks for any input.

A switch and a willing wife and kids will work better than a motion detector light.

I installed one that was under the carport roof out of the weather that worked okay for several years, but I doubt that it would have lasted very long out in the weather.

This has been a very good unit so far. Had it 2 years now. Menards has them. It has a duel bright setting. You can also have it flash twice when it senses motion. Heath Zenith model 5718.

I would find a electrical supplier or look them up online and check out RAB Bullet lights in the LED lights. They are better that Halogen and CFL. Led is a lot lower wattage and cooler running compared to halogen & CFL'S and hold up a lot longer. Two bullet lights will only pull 24 watts total for the two bulbs. I have bought lighting from big box stores and its cheap and doesn't hold up. If I have to climb 12-20FT. to put up lights Iam going to put some thing in thats going to hold up.

Most older motion light controllers will not work with LED lights. Some of the newer cheap ones will not work with them either.

Don't know what the neighbor put up , but it works. Our drives are side by side , He pointed it for end of his drive and every time I go in or out it comes on . Very handy late at night. Evan gets people walking down the sidewalk.

we got a led floodlight from lowes. it uses 33 watts total and right now is set from dusk to dawn. I thought it was pricey at the we got it but i like it now. it really lights up the back yard. we haven't used the motion setting yet so I cannot say about that. it cost around $100.00 but I am thinking about getting another one for the other corner of the house.

I bought the cheapest sale deal at lowe's for $5 a kit. I installed some at my house and some at my fiance's house. They work excellent. It's important to have your sensor adjusted properly. Sometimes it takes two or three attempts before you get it right. The work so well, I even bought an extra one just one to rob the sensor from and install it on the fluorescent light over my shop table so when I walk over to the table, the light comes on and goes off automatically when I don't come back. By the way, you also have to keep the light switch turned on and keep it on. If you flip it on and off, that's how you program it to be automatic, always off or always on. Mine have been installed over three years ago now and never had an issue. It helps to understand how they work.

If you buy the RAB they come with motion controller and it works but I have a dusk to dawn yard light and use the bullet to light other parts of yard matter a fact I light up whole yard (1 1/2 acres) when I take dog out at night. I hard wire mine into a manual switch to many deer around here for motion lights. RAB Lighting is in a differant class from what your big box stores sell.

Another alternative is to fit a separate sensor and light . This might be a little more time consuming but it lets you fit the sensor and light in different locations to suit their individual purpose . Too often the best place for the light is the worst for the sensor . Separate sensors are often of much better quality and have controls that allow you to set the sensitivity a lot more precisely .

Hello jayinNY,

Go down your local electrical supplier and get one there. Mine is an AGM stealth. It has sensitivity adjustments, dark sensing adjustments, and light on adjustments. IT also has a red light that blinks when tripped in the day light mimicking a security system. $50 ten year replacement warranty! I may still have the box if you need more info,

Guido.

I bought 2 Heath units about 28 years ago when I moved into this house. Both work great for motion detection, easily adjustable for sensitivity. Have only changed one of the four bulbs in that time, and the switch is always on.
