Klutch Welder - Would like your Input

Hey guys....went into Northern Tool the other day and they have a nice looking "Hybrid" welder combo Stick and Wire Feed Welder. I am wanting a Wire Feed Welder to do smaller hobby projects (repairing tractor sheetmetal, auto body & chassis work, building small things like battery boxes and other small parts, etc.) My great uncle was with me at the store and he was a welder for 36 years with US Steel. He knows how to weld! He always said to go with Lincoln or Miller but he wants me to buy the Klutch Welder. I'm scared of it because of the "off brand". Does anyone have one of these or know if it is a good machine?? We have much larger welders (all stick) ranging from a Miller Big 10 all the way to a Lincoln SAE-400 with a Detroit Diesel, so larger welding projects wouldn't be done with this machine.

Here it is......http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200631881_200631881

dont know anything about that brand. i would go with either a lincoln or a miller. easy to get supplies for, easy to get service locally. i have a miller 140 and its been a good welder. will handle up to 3/16 inch steel. the 141 is the new model that replaced the 140. heres a link
poke here

After 23 years my Millermatic 250 finally failed me
last week so I have been shopping as well. I saw
that Klutch at Northern also. Went and read some
reviews for that brand and sounds like they are a
good machine. I ended up buying a Hobart Ironman 230
for a few hundred more. Hope I did the right thing.

Hi I was looking at that welder online last
weekend. If your uncle says buy it. He must
think it's ok. it's to new from the search I
did. The Miller/ Lincoln and Hobart argument
surfaced with what I did find to. I don't want
to spend a $1500 or so for a spool gun and
welder for a couple small projects, then back
to small standard mig work.
Maybe you could buy this one and test it I need
to do similar stuff to you with it.
For a stop gap I just picked up a replacement
torch for my old mig until something gets
figured out, with a welder and spool gun
combination. I have a Lincoln stick for bigger
stuff to.
Regards Robert

I don't know whether buying a Klutch welder would have been the right thing, but you didn't do the wrong thing---that's for sure.

Anytime someone adds on an extra "Repair Plan"
above and beyond the Warranty, that tells me that
the Quality is suspect and they expect it to break
down.

Aside from the mystery brand issue, Mig and SMAW(stick)/TIG machines work very differently, I'm not sure i trust one that says it does both. My DialArc HP250 does heavy stick work, and is a great TIG machine, and my Lincoln Mig is also great.
I bought a cheap Chinese "Lotos" brand plasma cutter, and got what I paid for. I recently became Lotos-intolerant and bought a Hyperthem 45, and like my others, should never need replacement.

They make money if it does not break down. And usually lose money if it does break down.

Based on recent research I did before buying my first welder I like the desighn of that welder. I didn't see that one or it would have been a continder. Multi process machines I looked at were $1500 plus. I got smoking deals on new Lincoln K1297 and Pro Mig 180 machines and paid nearly as much for each. I didn't get a spool gun either. Infinate adjustments of power and wire speed are both reccomended by experts. Inverter and multi process are modern technology but have been in use long enough to be tryed and tested. The gun is Tweco style so parts are easy to find. I recieve exelent in store service at Northern for well pumps, hydraulics and pressure washer service. No reason to believe service is lacking for welders. I suggest you have your uncle test drive it and take it back if it falls short on preformance.
