Engine/hyd pump

So a guy brings me a wood splitter that has the hyd pump mounted to the flywheel ed of the engine but it spins it the wrong way. So if I turn the engine around so it is driven from the cranks shaft end of the engine will that reverse the direction that the pump spins??

Yes

Say it spins CCW at the flywheel, rotate it 180*, drive it off the crank, now it spins CW.

That is what I thought so now I get to spin the engine around and figure out how to make coupler for it

What kind of an engine is it? Air cooled or water cooled? My first thought would be that it would be easier to relocate the pump to the front of the engine.

Get a lovejoy coupling for it.

Maybe you could take the pump apart and put it back together reversed.
I've done that with a pump on a fuel oil furnace.
Don't know what your pump is like.

From what I can see if it was mounted on the flywheel end because the crank shaft end has the pulley hub on it still. This engine came off a Cub Cadet riding lawn tractor.

First thing I have to do is remove the old Cub Cadet pulley drive hub before I can do any type of coupler.

The problem is, is that it is now mounted at the front which on a lawn tractor type engine which this is, is the front. Engine is off a Cub Cadet lawn tractor

Okay, I can see clearly now. Yes, turn the engine around and use a Lovejoy coupler.

Right now the big problem is, it has the Cub Cadet drive pulley hub still on it so I have to remove it which is starting to get to be a big pain. It has 3 Allen set screws that lock it on and all of them are rounded out. Tried left hand bits that I just got and they would not even begin to touch them. Shoot my hand sharpened bits cut better but still not good enough

Do you have a oxy/acetylene torch?

I've had pretty good luck in cases like that by heating around the setscrews one at a time with a torch and then squirting them with water from a windex bottle or similar, then driving a suitable sized torx bit into the rounded out setscrew, they usually turn right out.

Alert! Those cub cadet drive pulleys are usually double set screwed. That is, one set screwed on top of another I guess to keep from loosening. I've seen a few cranks with grooves cut in them where folks used a gear puller and pulled with all their might because there was still three set screws in there.

On this set up you can not use a gear puller due the the fact the pulley is mounted with a piece that covers the center of it so you can not even see the shaft it is on

Yep I have a torch but hate to use that so close to an engine and a fuel tank. Been thinking about just splitting it with a angle grinder

Old your on the right track. I just take a cut of wheel in grind and split those type of pulleys and things. It saves breaking something else on the motor.

Take the tank off, be a shame to ruin a pulley that might come in handy on another job. Sparks from the grinder just as likely to cause a fire as the torch, low flame with a brazing tip should do it.

Hi
Why not use the pulley you have on the motor, make a 1:1 belt drive with a pulley on the pump. re mount the pump/ motor, and if the drives the wrong way use a longer belt and put a twist in to reverse direction if needed. I can't see what your working with so taking an educated guess this would work out to.

Belts tend to slip and on a splitter that could be a real pain in the back sides. I go with a chain before a belt. I have a belt drive hyd pump on my dozier and it is a pain

Ok No problem, Just a suggestion. Not implying this next reply refers to you.
i usually find here in my shop or on farms for guys fixing. The main problems with belt drives are. Nobody ever maintains them until the belts shot and the machine don't work.

They use the cheapest made in China ,replacement belt that stretches the quickest they can find, some expensive oem belts from China are no better either. Or the pulleys are worn/ out of line or any combination of the above together L.O.L.
