Viewing responses

Is there a way to view responses in chronological order in either Classic View or Modern View? A hotly debated topic often generates responses to responses and I often miss new postings when I'm trying to keep track by looking at the dates and times.

I find classic view to be the most logical in terms of seeing who is responding to who. Modern just confuses the heck out of me.

modern view tells you what responses are new since the last time you looked. It also shows you the ones that you have posted to so you can go directly to topics that interest you.

As mentioned, modern view puts all the posts in order in any given thread. Also, whenever a thread is posted to, it goes to the top of the list.
Every forum I belong to uses this format, and it's the only one I use here. I've never seen this "classic" thing anywhere but here and it makes no sense to me whatsoever.

What the Classic view does that I don't think the Modern View does is to show a sort of graphic family tree structure which is entirely different than chronological. If I first see a topic after it has been underway for a while, I may want to respond to a particular response, or to a response to a response, not necessarily to the original poster. If my response is posted in the order in which it is received (top of the list when it comes in),it's not necessarily going to be clear who I'm addressing. I can identify the person I'm addressing, but what if that person has already posted three or four times in that thread? For example, in a recent discussion somebody asked where you could buy the thing being discussed. I responded that it was widely available. In Classic View, that answer would be below and to the right of the posting it was responding to. But in Modern View, it was ten postings below the one it was responding to, so it made no sense at all to someone reading down the list. The Modern View works best when one person asks a question and each response is directly to that question. The graphical form of the Classic View works better, in my opinion, when a topic generates a large general discussion---lots of people addressing other people in the same discussion instead of simply replying to the original poster.

To respond to a particular post in modern view, you do what I just did, which is to click on the "quote" button in the upper right corner of that post. That includes the original post in your reply.

Also, part of the reason your reply may have been ten postings away is because this forum is intermingling the two formats. When modern view is the only one being used, that might still happen, but I don't think it's as likely to. And if you use the "quote" feature it for sure won't.

I hate it when that quote comes up and modern view is always a mess. I use classic and will as long as they have it. The only version that makes sence to me.

I hate it when the quote doesn't come up in modern view and I can't tell who Leroy is responding to. Classic is always a mess.

Trying to blend the classic and modern together is what is causing the issues. Need to go with modern, and scrap the classic. Then everyone would be on the same page at the same time.

And they would loose a lot of posters as a lot of us dislike the modern so much we would quit even checking let alone try posting anything. Scrap the modern view.

If you believe that then you have not been paying attention as to how many posters dislike the modern version that stinks.

I am 64 years old. I stepped right into the 21st century several years ago. The classic view does not exist anywhere else on the 'net, except for right here.

That's only because they still have a choice. I've also read all the posts from people stating how much they love this forum and what it means to them. If modern was the only one available, people would learn to use it rather than give up YT.

That's right. My wife gave me an Ipad last spring for my B'day. I used it a little and then didn't much for months because it was difficult because of the differences and new things about it. Then when her lap top died I had to use it, because she needed to use my lap top for some things that could not be done on the pad. So once again I had to prove that an old Far... I mean dog can learn new tricks. Now I use the pad more than the lap top.

I tried the classic view and it confused me, probably they same way modern view confuses some. I've been coming on here for the past year via my iPad and I love it, it's much handier than the laptop!!
