Hello,

Finding new settings on the camera I fun!
One picture is with flash, the other on manual.
Anyone can guess which picture was taken in the manual setting? They are not from the same fire.

I tried to make a video of our fire one time; it came out looking kind of like the second picture.

I think the digital sensor gets overwhelmed by all the infrared and the picture ends up looking a bit wonky.

Hello Tom in PA,

It all about proper exposure. Auto settings are not always the best ones.

The strobe action stops movement and the fire flickers are always moving. Manually, the darkness of the rest of the fireplace confuses the camera sensors and you get the bottom picture. Think of the strobe like in a disco, it stops action.

Hello bo,

Nice explanation but...........
No strobe involved in the pictures. First one full auto. But in the manual there are no sensors to set the shot. NOW............
In the bottom one, can you guess at the speed and the aperture of the lenses?

Guido -

Another fun thing to try out is what's called "HDR" (High Dynamic Range). Either you or the camera take at least three pictures in quick succession: one normal, one underexposed, and one overexposed. Then you or the camera combines them to get the best exposure. Done correctly it's subtle and makes a nice picture. But it can be overdone and obviously fake looking. If your camera doesn't have it built-in you can get free software to do it (most photo editing software already has it available).

Hello TomH in PA,

I have been using photo shop for years. The new camera came with an excellent set of programs as well. I like photo shop because, I've had it long enough to learn its many features. The new program is better though. If the video of your fireplace came out like my second picture, it was overexposed. That second picture was taken with a lens aperture of f5 and exposure time was 10 seconds. Hence the spark trails,

Guido.
