I wore through the insulation on my table saw, the cord was laying on the belt, worse part this is not the first time.

It did trip the GFCI, so I assume ground and neutral got shorted together.
 
Don't feel bad, I've shortened cords a few times using circular saw and hedge trimmer. The last time the circular saw cut the cord I installed a 20 ft extension cord. Works better than the orginal short cord.

I attached a short cord on electric chainsaw just in case the cord tries to get in the way of the chain. Hasn't happened yet, but there is always tomorrow.
 
The neutral and ground got cut and touched . The black and white shorting would trip the breaker not the GFI.[ Hopefully]
